Ellipsoid ๐ Geoid ๐ Topo Surface
The ellipsoid is a mathematical idealization, the geoid is a physical approximation of mean sea level, and the topographic surface is the real, irregular surface of the Earth. Understanding these three surfaces and their relationships is crucial for accurate geodetic measurements, mapping, and spatial analysis.
The geoid undulation (or geoid height, denoted as N) is the vertical difference between the geoid and the ellipsoid at any given point. This value can be positive (geoid is above the ellipsoid) or negative (geoid is below the ellipsoid).
The height of a point on the Earth's surface can be defined in two main ways:
* Ellipsoidal height (h): The height of the point above or below the ellipsoid. This is the height typically provided by GPS.
* Orthometric height (H): The height of the point above or below the geoid. This is what we commonly refer to as "elevation above sea level."
