Makhūl Abū ʿAbdillāh (رحمه الله) said:
“أدركتُ قَوْمًا يستحيون من الله في سوادِ الليلِ من طولِ الهجعة، وإنَّما كانوا أبدانًا قائمة، وقلوبًا ساهرة.”

Rāfi’ ibn Ashras (رحمه الله) said:
«كانَ يُقال: مِن عُقوبةِ الكذّابِ أن لا يُقبَلَ صِدقُه. وأنا أقول: مِن عُقوبةِ الفاسقِ المُبتدعِ أن لا تُذكَرَ مَحاسِنُه»
“It used to be said: Part of the punishment of a liar is that even when he speaks the truth, he is not believed.
And I say: Part of the punishment of an immoral innovator is that his good qualities are not mentioned.”

Sufyan al-Thawri (رحمه الله) said:
لَا تَصْحَبْ مَنْ يُحْصِي مِنَّتَهُ عَلَيْكَ

Ibn ’Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) said:
لا تسبوا أصحاب محمد ﷺ، فإن الله قد أمرنا بالاستغفار لهم، وهو يعلم أنهم سيقتتلون
“Do not revile the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ, for Allah commanded us to seek forgiveness for them, while He knew that they would fight one another.”

Mālik ibn Dīnār (رحمه الله) said:
«مَنْ لَمْ يُؤْتَ مِنْ الْعِلْمِ مَا يَقْمَعُهُ، فَمَا أُوتِيَ مِنْهُ لَا يَنْفَعُهُ»
“Whoever has not been given knowledge that restrains and disciplines him, then whatever knowledge he has been given will not benefit him.”

‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (رضي الله عنه) also said:
إِنِّي لَأَرَى الرَّجُلَ فَيُعْجِبُنِي، فَأَسْأَلُ: أَلَهُ مِهْنَةٌ؟ فَإِنْ قِيلَ: لَا، سَقَطَ مِنْ عَيْنِي
“Indeed, I see a man and he impresses me. Then I ask: ‘Does he have a profession or trade?’ If I am told, ‘No,’ he falls from my esteem.”

Sufyān al-Thawrī (رحمه الله) said:
بَلَغَنَا وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ، أَنَّ أَكْثَرَ مَا يَجِدُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي كِتَابِهِ مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ، الْهَمُّ وَالْحُزْنُ
“We have been informed, and Allah knows best, that the greatest amount of good deeds a believer will find in his record on the Day of Resurrection will be the worries and sadness (that he endured).”

Ibrāhīm ibn Adham (رحمه الله) said:

Malik ibn Anas (رحمه الله) said:
«إِنَّ هَذَا الْعِلْمَ هُوَ لَحْمُكَ وَدَمُكَ، وَعَنْهُ تُسْأَلُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، فَانْظُرْ عَمَّنْ تَأْخُذُهُ»

Ash-Shāfi’ī (رحمه الله) advised his student al-Rabī’ ibn Sulaymān (رحمه الله), saying:
« وَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ صَلَاحَ قَلْبِكَ أَوْ ابْنَكَ أَوْ أَخِيكَ، أَوْ مَنْ شِئْتَ صَلَاحَهُ، فَأَوْدِعْهُ فِي رِيَاضِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَبَيْنَ صُحْبَةِ الْقُرْآنِ، سَيُصْلِحُهُ اللَّهُ شَاءَ أَمْ أَبَى »
“If you desire the rectification of your heart, or your son, or your brother, or anyone whose rectification you seek, then place him in the gardens of the Qur’ān and among the companionship of the Qur’ān. Allah will rectify him, whether he wills it or not.”

Salamah ibn Dīnār (رحمه الله) said:
ثَلَاثٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ كَمُلَ عَقْلُهُ:
مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ، وَحَفِظَ لِسَانَهُ، وَقَنِعَ بِمَا رَزَقَهُ اللَّهُ
“Three qualities, whoever possesses them has perfected his intellect: knowing himself, guarding his tongue, and being content with what Allah has provided him.”

Ahmad ibn Hanbal (رحمه الله) used to say:
«اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُمْتِنَا خَيْرَ مَا عِنْدَكَ بِشَرِّ مَا عِنْدَنَا»

Bakr al-Muzanī رحمه الله said:
