Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah launched the National Cooperative Policy 2025 on Thursday, replacing the 2002 policy. Structure of the Policy: Includes 16 objectives grouped under six broad strategic mission pillars to strengthen the cooperative movement at grassroots levels from 2025 to 2045. Model Cooperative Villages: Develop five model cooperative villages in every tehsil, encouraging other villages to emulate them and aspire to be among the best in their state. Institutional Mechanism for Implementation: — National Steering Committee on Cooperation Policy: Chaired by the Union Minister of Cooperation, responsible for overall guidance, inter-ministerial coordination, and periodic policy review. — Policy Implementation and Monitoring Committee: Chaired by the Union Cooperation Secretary, tasked with central-state coordination, addressing implementation challenges, and periodic monitoring and evaluation. Current Cooperative Landscape in India: — India has over eight lakh cooperative societies, representing more than one-fourth of the world’s cooperatives. — About one-third of India’s rural population is directly connected to cooperatives as members for diverse socio-economic needs. Ministry of Cooperation: Established as a separate ministry by the Modi government four years ago, with Amit Shah as its head. Prior to this, the cooperatives department was under the Agriculture Ministry since 1979.
