Kilometer 180 of a 250km ultra-marathon.
Your body's done negotiating.
It's just shutting down.
Your mind starts offering deals: "Just walk this section. Nobody will know."
That's the moment everyone talks about pushing through.
But here's what nobody tells you.
Real resilience isn't about ignoring that voice.
It's about having a system that works when willpower fails.
After 20 years hiring for Cisco, Meta, Skype, and Betfair, I thought I understood pressure.
Then 2017 hit.
Lost my father. Lost my son. Months apart.
Still leading Series A hiring. Still making decisions that determined company survival.
The ultra-marathons taught me something I couldn't learn in boardrooms:
When everything's screaming at you to quit, you don't need more strength.
You need a better process.
The same skill that got me past kilometer 180 transformed how I evaluate talent.
Not by toughing it out.
By learning to rise through what tries to break you.
Most leaders think resilience is about endurance.
It's actually about systems that function when you can't.
That's the difference between surviving pressure and using it as an advantage.
Overthinking kills momentum. Hereâs how I reset in ten seconds while grieving and still building teams.
Stress hit fast.
I was hiring. I was heartbroken.
Clarity vanished.
I pushed harder.
Thought more.
Spiralled.
Hereâs what brought me back:
Shake your arms for five seconds.
Let the panic move out.
Breathe in for four.
Hold.
Exhale slow.
Look around.
Name three objects.
Feel your body.
Feel the room.
Youâre back.
You donât rise to your goals.
You fall to your identity.
This reset brought me back to mine.
Not the overwhelmed one.
The present one.
Use it before your next call.
Resourceful identity creates results.
A few years ago, I thought success meant avoiding pain.
Turns out, pain was the thing that shaped me the most.
No one escapes struggle. Not the wealthy. Not the spiritual. Not the successful.
Earth isnât a playground. Itâs a classroom. And every challenge is a lesson in disguise.
The real growth? It happens when you choose love over fear. Especially when itâs hard.
Thatâs how you build something that lasts. Not by avoiding the fire, but by learning how to walk through it.
Your brain filters out 99% of whatâs happening around you.
So if youâre constantly consuming fear, guess what youâll notice more of?
Fear.
Scarcity.
Threats.
Thatâs the job of your Reticular Activating System (RAS). It filters reality based on what you focus on.
So if you want to spot better opportunities?
You need to feed it better inputs.
Step 1: Cut out the news.
Itâs not âkeeping you informedâ, itâs programming your lens.
Step 2: Write down (yes, by hand) the kind of opportunities you do want.
Handwriting activates way more neurons than typing. It helps your brain lock in on what matters.
Try it for 7 days.
Youâll be surprised what starts showing up.
Suppose you let go of every anxious thought about tomorrow.
Suppose you stop trying to fix everything and simply allowed things to be as they are, what you would find is a curious lightness, a calm awareness that life is unfolding precisely as it should.
It doesn't mean everything becomes perfect by your definition. It means everything becomes true.
The right people, the right moments, the right opportunities begin to appear because you're no longer blocking them with your resistance.
Trust is the space through which abundance can finally enter.
You might say, But James, if I stop trying, won't my life fall apart?
And I say, quite the opposite. The only things that fall apart are the illusions that were never real to begin with.
Avoidance is a shape-shifter.
It looks like âsmart decisions,â but itâs often just regulated fear.
Your nervous system says âwaitâ and your mind builds a spreadsheet to agree.
Want to break the loop?
Stop asking your mind for permission.
Start building belief through motion.
To live the Pause is to exit the automatic.
Itâs not about silence, itâs about sovereignty.
When you pause, you soften the egoâs grip and let your
Higher Knowing guide the next step.
đ Practice:
Set 3 intentional reminders in your day:
âPause. Breathe. Reconnect.â
Let the sacred interrupt the scripted.
You are not your inner critic.
It just feels like you are, because your nervous system learned that self-shaming protects you from external shame.
This is survival logic.
đ âIf I shame myself first, they canât hurt me.â
But hereâs the truth:
That voice is an old protector, not your truth.
Next time it pipes up, try this:
âThank you for trying to protect me. Iâm safe now.â
This simple reframe helps you step out of fusion with the voice.
From self-identification â to self-observation.
Thatâs the shift.
And thatâs where healing begins.
Every belief you hold follows the same trap.
Judgment â You tell yourself a story.
Attachment â Emotion locks it in place.
Resistance â That story becomes a repeating pattern.
Thatâs how limiting beliefs are formed.
Not because youâre broken.
But because your system once thought it was protecting you.
I know because I lived it.
In 2017 I lost my father and son.
I was under criminal investigation.
I was building teams for high-growth startups, while carrying grief and PTSD.
The stories I told myself back then?
âIâm not enough.â
âI have to hold it all together.â
âThey canât see me weak.â
Those stories helped me survive.
But they also kept me stuck.
Thatâs why I built Resiliencify and the R.E.V.I.V.E. Framework.
Itâs how I cut the weights that were holding me down:
âď¸ Resilience â notice the story without judgment.
âď¸ Empowerment â release the emotional charge.
âď¸ Vision â see a bigger perspective.
âď¸ Integrity â align with who I really am.
âď¸ Valor â act with courage despite fear.
âď¸ Execution â make it a daily practice.
The result?
My balloon rose.
My life did too.
Today I help others do the same.
Because your beliefs arenât who you are, theyâre just weights.
And when you let goâŚ
You rise higher.
đ What story are you ready to cut loose?
The 3 Steps That Create Every Belief You Hold
Most people think beliefs are facts.
Theyâre not.
Beliefs are stories you once told yourself⌠and then held onto.
The truth?
Every belief you carry, empowering or limiting, follows the exact same pattern.
The Belief Creation System
1. Judgment â Story
Something happens.
You instantly tell yourself a story about what it means.
Thatâs judgment.
2. Attachment â Emotion
If the moment carries strong emotion (fear, shame, joy, love), the story sticks.
If itâs bland, it fades.
But if the emotion is heavy, the story embeds itself into your nervous system.
3. Resistance â Pattern
Once a story has emotion behind it, you unconsciously create patterns to protect yourself.
Those patterns repeat.
They become autopilot.
Example: A Childhood Dog
Imagine youâre five years old.
A little Jack Russell runs up, friendly and wagging.
But to your eyes, itâs fast, loud, and full of teeth.
Judgment: âThatâs a monster.â
Attachment: Fear locks in the story.
Resistance: For years, parks feel unsafe. You avoid them without knowing why.
30 years later, youâre still carrying that five-year-oldâs story.
The Weights That Hold You Down
Consciousness is like a hot air balloon.
Itâs designed to rise.
But stories are the weights tied to the basket.
The more stories youâre attached to, the heavier your life feels.
Anxiety, doubt, shame, all of them trace back to stories you once believed you needed to survive.
Hereâs the key:
Those stories arenât proof youâre broken.
They were once brilliant.
They kept you safe.
They protected your younger self.
But what kept you safe yesterday may hold you back today.
How to Rise
Transformation isnât about fighting yourself.
Itâs about honouring the stories that protected youâŚ
And then letting them go with love.
Thatâs how you lighten the basket.
Thatâs how you rise higher.
Your Reflection
Take 5 minutes today and ask yourself:
What story am I still carrying that once kept me safe?
What would happen if I thanked it⌠and let it go?
Because the moment you let go, you stop being defined by the past.
You step into your highest self.
Stories = Weights. Let go â Rise Higher.
I used to think my nervous system was broken.
Turns out, it was just running survival mode on autopilot.
The stories we tell ourselves about the past shape who we become.
But stories can be rewritten.
Iâm living proof.
Comment ârewriteâ if youâre ready to break the cycle and start a new chapter.
Belief work isnât a checkbox. Itâs CrossFit for your nervous system.
In 2017, I lost my dad and my son.
Grief didnât care about my goals or the teams I was leading.
My body just wanted safety.
To shut down.
To disappear.
And with it came the old, loud beliefs:
âYouâre on your own.â
âPush harder or lose it all.â
âYouâre broken.â
Even now, those voices still whisper when life gets heavy.
Thatâs why Iâve built rituals to remind myself whatâs true, not whatâs loud:
đ My ritual:
Phrase: âPressure doesnât define me, it refines me.â
Gesture: Hand on heart, deep exhale.
Journal cue: Whatâs true right now? Whatâs just fear talking?
Every time I do this, Iâm not just calming my system.
Iâm rewriting the story.
Belief work isnât about perfection.
Itâs about awareness.
And choosing again.
Because Iâm no longer sleepwalking through old patterns.
Iâm writing new code.
Most people live on autopilot.
I used to be one of them.
Wake up â React to chaos â Crash into bed â Repeat.
Then life hit me. Hard.
I lost my father and my son in the same year.
At the same time, I was building teams for high-growth startups under ridiculous pressure.
Thatâs when I realised something:
You can't create anything meaningful when you're just trying to survive.
But you can shift everything with intentionality.
So I started journaling.
One page a day. For 90 days.
Same questions. Every time:
What showed up for me today?
What was my intention?
Where did fear or comparison try to hijack me?
What did I learn from stillness?
Who did I share that with?
It didnât just change my mindset.
It changed me.
By the end of 90 days, youâre not holding a notebook.
Youâre holding proof that youâve grown.
Because transformation doesnât happen in your head.
It happens in the quiet choices no one sees.
Thinking of trying this?
I became really good at pretending I was fine.
But in 2017, I lost my dad and my son.
And nothing about me was actually fine.
I didnât know how to deal with the grief, so I didnât.
I buried myself in work. Stayed busy.
Because slowing down meant feeling it, and I couldnât handle that.
At the time, I thought I was being strong.
And maybe I was.
But that same âstrengthâ eventually turned into something that kept me stuck.
I didnât need to keep surviving. I needed to start healing.
It didnât happen all at once. But the moment I saw the pattern, something shifted.
I realised I wasnât broken. I was just doing what I knew.
And I could choose something different.
If youâve been carrying pain like that, maybe itâs time to look at it.
Not to fix it right away. Just to see it.
Thatâs where it starts.
In 2017, I lost both my father and my son.
It shattered me.
My beliefs didnât "fail" me, they went into overdrive.
Not because they were wrong, but because my nervous system was trying to keep me alive.
âShut down. Donât feel this again.â
âControl everything. Donât lose anything else.â
These werenât conscious thoughts.
They were old survival patterns, wired in from childhood trauma.
The shift didnât come from fighting them.
It came from asking:
đ§ âWhat are you protecting me from?â
â¤ď¸ âWhat do you need to feel safe enough to let go?â
Thatâs when healing started.
Thatâs when I stopped reacting and started leading.
Leadership isnât just strategy.
Itâs nervous system regulation.
Itâs grief work.
Itâs knowing how to create safety within yourself, so you can create it for others.
If youâre in a season of loss or transition, this is your reminder:
You donât have to bulldoze your beliefs.
You just have to listen to them.
I used to believe my worth was tied to how much pressure I could handle.
After losing my father and son in the same year while under criminal investigation, I buried my grief and kept building teams for Series A startups like nothing had happened.
The pattern looked like strength on the outside. But inside, it was my nervous system replaying a survival story: âPush harder, hold it together, donât feel.â
This worked⌠until it didnât. The crash came in the form of PTSD, depression, and burnout.
đ When I mapped the pattern, I saw it clearly:
Belief: âI must be strong to be loved or respected.â
Behavior: I numbed out, over-delivered, never asked for help.
Result: People praised me for my resilience, which reinforced the belief.
Hereâs the truth I learned: Your patterns are not who you are. Theyâre just old protection mechanisms trying to keep you safe.
When you see them, you can start to break free.
My deepest limiting belief wasnât logical.
It was born in chaos.
In 2017, everything collapsed.
I lost my father. Then my son. Six months apart.
I was under criminal investigation for something I didnât do.
Still, I showed up.
Built teams. Delivered for clients. Smiled in meetings.
But inside?
I believed: âIâm not safe.â
It wasnât a thought.
It lived in my nervous system.
It shaped how I hired, led, lived.
I overworked. Controlled. Protected.
It became my pattern.
Years later, I realised:
That belief wasnât true.
It just felt true.
And until I named it, it ran the show.
Now, when I coach founders and recruiters, we donât just talk strategy.
We go deeper.
Because you canât change a pattern you havenât named.
đ Journal prompt I still use:
âWhat belief do I carry about myself that limits my freedom?â
Donât fix it.
Donât judge it.
Just name it.
Awareness is step one.
Liberation starts there.
I used to think control meant safety.
Plans, checklists, structure, all of it made me feel secure.
Until it didnât.
Until the pressure to control everything started controlling me.
Letting go felt terrifying at first.
But on the other side?
Clarity. Space. Actual peace.
Sometimes surrender isnât weakness.
Itâs wisdom.
If this hit, drop a đ or just tell me how you let go.
