Ubay Ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه said: "Stay on the Path and the Sunnah, because a person who is on the Path and Sunnah remembers Allah and cries out of fear of Allah, the Hellfire will not touch him. Verily (staying on) Allah's path and the Sunnah modestly is better than going away from the path and Sunnah intently." [Abū Nu'aym in al-Hilyah, 1/252]

When the idea of making du’ā appears in your mind, do not take it for granted. Make the du’ā. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “If Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) did not want to accept your du’ā, He would not have guided you to make it (in the first place)” [عدة الصابرين]

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِی ٱلصُّورِ نَفۡخَةࣱ وَ ٰ⁠حِدَةࣱ ﴿ ١٣ ﴾ 13. Then when the Trumpet will be blown with one blowing (the first one), وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةࣰ وَ ٰ⁠حِدَةࣰ ﴿ ١٤ ﴾ 14. And the earth and the mountains shall be removed from their places, and crushed with a single crushing, فَیَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ﴿ ١٥ ﴾ 15. Then on that Day shall the (Great) Event befall, وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ فَهِیَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ وَاهِیَةࣱ ﴿ ١٦ ﴾ 16. And the heaven will split asunder, for that Day it (the heaven will be frail (weak), and torn up, وَٱلۡمَلَكُ عَلَىٰۤ أَرۡجَاۤىِٕهَاۚ وَیَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ ثَمَـٰنِیَةࣱ ﴿ ١٧ ﴾ 17. And the angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them.

سبحان الله

It is not just about leaving the sin, but hating it. Because if you leave a sin, but still long to commit it, you’ll be stuck in an endless loop of leaving and revisiting. But when you hate the sin, you destroy the loop. And even the thought of revisiting it will have you repenting to Allāh سبحانه وتعالى.

Abu ad-Darda said: "If one of your brothers changes or commits a sin, neither leave nor forsake him. Rather preach to him in the most beautiful way and have patience with him. For indeed, at times a brother can be correct and at times he can slip." [Hilyat al-Awliyah 4/232] There was a man who used to enter upon 'Umar bin al-Khattāb رضي الله عنه and 'Umar did not see him and inquired about him and it was said to him that his condition changed (weakened in imān). So, 'Umar wrote to him admonishing him and when his letter reached him he cried and repented with the best of repentance. 'Umar said: "This is what you should do if you see a brother of yours fall into error; direct him and make du'à that Allāh pardons him and do not aid the Shaytān against him." [Hilyat al-Awliyah 97/4]

Everyone should go back to this story once in a while. You are not safe from going down the same path as your brother, so thank Allāh abundantly and remember to attribute all your achievements and success to the One who granted you it in the first place. May Allāh never deprive us of His rahmah, may He forgive us for our ungratefulness and shortcomings. Wallahu musta’an.
