📅 The Treaty of Jassy was concluded at the end of the Russian-Turkish war in 1791 and through it the entire Northern Black Sea coast was formally recognised as part of the Russian Empire. In a push to create a port for military and commercial needs on the newly acquired lands, on May 27, 1794, Empress Catherine the Great issued a rescript on founding a city and a harbour on the site of the town of Khadjibey. On August 22, 1794, the first piles were driven into the site that will become Odessa in the future. The great grandnephew of the famous French cardinal, Duke Armand Richelieu, who had been in the service of the Russian imperial court for many years, played a major role in developing that city. During the Napoleonic invasion, he addressed the people of Odessa calling upon them to give a strong rebuff to the invaders. ☝️ Hero of the Patriotic War of 1812 and Foreign Campaigns of the Russian Army Count Mikhail Vorontsov did much for the city. He turned Odessa into the main trading outpost in southern Russia. Outstanding Russian writers, artists, musicians and true heroes of the Motherland lived in Odessa in different periods of time. However, today, the regime that took power as a result of the coup in Ukraine is trying to destroy their traces in the history of the city. In 2014, Odessa residents openly opposed the neo-Nazis who seized power in Kiev. However, radicals drowned in blood the freedom-loving Russian-speaking Odessa on May 2, 2014. Since then, the terror unleashed by the nationalists against proud Odessa residents and all other dissenting residents of Ukraine has been intensifying. 💬 Excerpt from a comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on marking 10 years since the May 2, 2014, tragedy in Odessa: We are confident that the day when Odessa will throw off the yoke of the neo-Banderites and once again become a truly free city and home to people of different ethnicities who will live in peace and accord is not far off. ✈️ On May 20, 1916 — 1️⃣0️⃣8️⃣ years ago — legendary Soviet military pilot and Hero of the Soviet Union Alexey Maresyev was born. It was he who served as a prototype for Boris Polevoy's brilliant novel "The Story of a Real (True) Man". Alexey Maresyev inspired many generations, millions of people all over the world admired and continue to admire his courage and determination. Although he had severe health issues since childhood and often fell ill, even contracted malaria and suffered from rheumatism, his tremendous willpower and stubbornness allowed him to cope with excruciating pains in his limb joints make his dream of soaring the skies come true. 🔹Maresyev tried to enrol at a pilot school twice but was rejected for health reasons. Yet he pursued his dream: joined an air club in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and graduated from the Bataysk Aviation School in 1940 and became a Junior Lieutenant. In the spring of 1942, the young pilot’s stubbornness and professionalism proved useful when intense fighting was raging in the Novgorod Region. On April 4, the Nazis downed his Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter, and Maresyev found himself on enemy-held territory. Although he was seriously wounded, he managed to reach Soviet positions 18 days later, wading through deep snowdrifts. His feet were frozen and gangrene began. His feet had to be amputated. Although his prospects as an air force pilot seemed bleak, Maresyev was determined to re-join his comrades at the frontlines. Maresyev was fitted with prosthetics and, contrary to doctors’ recommendations, took to the skies once again in June 1943. He later downed seven enemy aircraft. 🕯 On May 8, 1967, Maresyev was entrusted with carrying and transferring a torch with the Eternal Flame during the ceremony of unveiling the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden. Alexey Maresyev passed away on May 18, 2001 in Moscow and was buried at Novodevichye Cemetery. Streets have been named in his honour, and monuments honouring him have also been unveiled. #FacesOfVictory #WeRemember

🗓 On May 20, 1942, the Red Army concluded the Kerch operation, the largest landing op on the Eastern Front. In late December 1941, the Soviet forces liberated Kerch and Feodosia. The Headquarters of the Supreme High Command also planned to aid Sevastopol, surrounded by German and Romanian troops. Successful ops on the Transcaucasian Front and the Black Sea Navy's efforts in Crimea forced the German command to urgently transfer troops from near Sevastopol to meet the advancing Red Army. ⚔️ Soviet soldiers and sailors’ heroism and selflessness allowed to thwart the Nazis’ plans to immediately capture Taman and advance to the Caucasus. The Kerch landing operation showcased that the Red Army's ability to successfully carry out offensive operations in difficult conditions. The experience of the operation was generalised, analysed, and used in subsequent battles of the Great Patriotic War. 🌟 On May 12, 1944, during the Crimean offensive operation, the Red Army completely liberated Crimea from the Nazi invaders. #Victory79

🎙 Russia's President Vladimir Putin replied to questions from Russian media representatives on the outcomes of his two-day state visit to the People’s Republic of China (May 17, 2024) Key talking points: 💬 The fact that the future depends on Russia & China is only partly true. The future of humankind depends on the whole of humanity. Certainly, Russia & China are important components of modern civilisation. We have our own views on how we should develop. <...> We believe that development should be constructive & peaceful, no doubt about it. Apart from our interests, it should heed the interests of all parties to international interaction. • Of course, it is necessary to strengthen the emerging multipolar world. There is absolutely no doubt that a new world is taking shape before our eyes and becoming multipolar. • Of course, we are analysing now everything that is taking place in this regard [the Ukrainian crisis]. Of course, we are looking at what is happening around the universally announced meeting in Switzerland, in Geneva. I believe this is the venue of the meeting. We are certainly not going to discuss any formulas about which we know absolutely nothing. But as distinct from Ukraine, we have never rejected talks. The goal of this event [in Geneva] is clear. They want to gather as many countries as possible, declare that everything has been agreed upon with everyone and then present it to Russia as a resolved issue, as an ultimatum. This will never happen. • Sanctions imposed on third countries engaged in economic activities are doubly or triply illegitimate because sanctions are absolutely illegitimate when adopted without the approval of the UN Security Council. • By undermining trust in the dollar for political reasons, the US authorities are weakening the main, the most powerful & important instrument of their might – the dollar itself. They are doing irreparable damage to themselves. Using one of popular sayings, they are quarrelling with their own bread & butter. Read in full #RussiaChina

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment regarding Kiev regime’s terrorist attacks on Russian regions 💬 On May 16 and 17, the Kiev neo-Nazi regime used fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned speedboats to launch another massive attack on Crimea, the Krasnodar Territory and other Russian regions. Russian air defence forces destroyed and intercepted more than 100 UAVs (51 over the Crimean Peninsula, 44 over the Krasnodar Territory, six over the Belgorod Region, and one over the Kursk Region). The Black Sea Fleet naval aviation and patrol boats destroyed six unmanned speedboats. Earlier this week, Russian Defence Ministry reported the destruction of 20 US-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles, over 130 missiles, including US-made HIMARS and Czech-made Vampire, over 20 French-made Hammer guided bombs, and four British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles. These barbaric attacks with the use of Western-made weapons are clearly backed by the US and British curators overseeing Zelensky’s regime. They go beyond supplying it with ever longer-range missiles and heavy weapons and now authorise their use against Russia, further escalating the conflict. This Banderite clique seems to have come to believe in its own impunity amid the Western emissaries’ frequent visits to Kiev lately. ❗️ Once again, we would like to issue a stark warning to Washington, London, Brussels and other Western capitals, as well as Kiev which is controlled by them, that they are playing with fire. Russia will not leave unanswered these acts of aggression against its territory.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the 8th Russia-China EXPO & the 4th Russia-China Forum on Interregional Cooperation together with Vice President of China Han Zheng 💬 Vladimir Putin: The fact that Harbin is hosting these two important events is highly symbolic, since Harbin is one of China’s biggest centres for research, education & innovation. • Since its founding in the late 19th century, Harbin has been a symbol of the close ties linking Russia & China and their intertwined destinies, and the mutual enrichment of their cultures & traditions. • Harbin is a city that commemorates our nations’ brotherhood-in-arms. More than 12,000 Soviet fighters perished in the battles to liberate Northeast China from Japanese invaders. It was Harbin that on September 16, 1945, hosted the joint Victory Parade to commemorate the end of hostilities on the Pacific Front & of #WWII. • We have laid flowers at the memorial to Soviet soldiers & officers. I am extremely grateful to the people of Harbin & the Chinese officials for preserving the memory of our liberators & our shared history of military glory. They have taken great care of our shared historical, spiritual & cultural heritage. • Building upon the glorious traditions of neighbourliness, friendship & cooperation, we can confidently look forward & embark on ambitious projects together, charting & implementing our grandest plans. President Xi Jinping & I discussed in detail the prospects of developing this close & multi-dimensional cooperation during our talks last night. 📈 The inseparable partnership between Russia & China directly contributes to the growth of both economies, ensuring our energy security, creating new production facilities & high-paying jobs, & ultimately improving the wealth & quality of life of our citizens. 🤝 Traditionally, the EXPO exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to promote industry-specific ties. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 During his state visit to China, Russia's President Vladimir Putin met with Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang. 💬 Vladimir Putin: We have signed the fundamental Joint Statement on deepening our comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction as we enter a new era. We have set ambitious goals and long-term guidelines for the development of the entire range of Russia-China relations. Over the past seven and a half decades, Russia-China relations have developed dynamically and reached an unprecedentedly high level. They are based on a solid foundation of neighbourliness, equality, mutual respect and support. This strategic approach serves the fundamental interests of the Russian and Chinese nations. ☝️ We have scored impressive results in practical cooperation through joint efforts. Today, we have already discussed statistics that highlight bilateral trade. <...> According to Chinese statistics, bilateral trade has exceeded $240 billion. Our statistics are slightly lower, but this is not important. We have reached such a high level in the past five years. <...> You have established cordial and business-like relations with Mr Mishustin, the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. We hope that your close and truly professional working relationship will continue. 🤝 In practice, the mechanism of regular meetings between Russian and Chinese heads of government has proven to be effective. This is not a threat or a warning, but a description of an inevitable scenario under certain circumstances that may be orchestrated by the West. #Neocolonialism The Westerners are undermining the international currency and financial system that they themselves created. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 Russia's President Vladimir Putin and President of China Xi Jinping made a media statement following Russia-China talks (May 16, 2024) 💬 Vladimir Putin: The talks we have just finished highlighted the great significance that Moscow and Beijing attach to the development and strengthening of comprehensive Russia-China partnership and strategic interaction. This partnership can certainly set an example of ties between neighbouring states. Key talking points: • This state visit takes place in the year of the 75th Anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Our country was the first to recognise the People’s Republic of China on October 2, 1949, the day after its declaration. • I want to note the significance of the Joint Statement we have adopted, which sets new objectives and long-term directives for advancing the entire spectrum of Russian-Chinese relations. 📈 In 2023, bilateral trade surged by a quarter, reaching a new milestone of $240 billion, as reported by Chinese statistics. While there may be a slight variance in figures, the overall total is entirely accurate. <...> Currently, there are over 80 priority projects valued at approximately $200 billion in progress or in preparation for implementation through the respective intergovernmental commission. • Our talks have reaffirmed that Russia and China have similar or identical views on many international and regional issues. Both countries have an independent and sovereign foreign policy. We are working together to create a fairer and more democratic multipolar world order. • We have agreed to further improve communication between credit and banking institutions of Russia and China, while actively employing national payment systems to support our economic operators. 🤝 Russia and China are fruitfully working together in #BRICS and the #SCO. <...> Our countries are resolved to continue working to align integration processes underway within the framework of the #EAEU with China's Belt and Road Initiative. 🇷🇺🇨🇳 Beginning of Russia's President Vladimir Putin's conversation with President of China Xi Jinping 💬 Vladimir Putin: We will be marking a major milestone, an Anniversary. On October 1, we will celebrate 75 years since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and the very next day, on October 2, our two countries established diplomatic relations. The Soviet Union was the first country to recognise the new China. Moscow and Beijing have built a solid track record in terms of their practical cooperation. In 2023, bilateral trade increased by almost 25%, reaching $227 billion, which was quite a positive result. <...> It is of fundamental significance that relations between Russia and China do not depend on short-term considerations and are not directed against anyone. Today, our cooperation in global affairs is one of the main stabilising factors on the international stage. We are acting jointly to uphold the principles of justice and a democratic world order that reflects multipolar realities and is based on international law. 🎙 Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov answers questions during a plenary session of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Moscow, May 14, 2024) Key talking points: • Western efforts to preserve its hegemony have entered a critical phase. <...> China has emerged as a leader of global growth. This fact does not sit well with the US, which, along with its satellites, having brought the rest of the West to its heel, made a doctrinal statement that they cannot allow anyone to become stronger or more influential than Washington. So, objectively, alongside our Chinese colleagues we are interested in continuing to lead the efforts to establish a fairer and more democratic world order. 🤝 The duo of Moscow and Beijing is playing a crucial balancing role in international affairs. I am confident that the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to China will further strengthen our joint efforts. • Following the expansion of #BRICS, our representation in the #G20 has increased. Half of the G20 members are either BRICS members or share similar perspectives with us. Therefore, the G20 will undergo positive transformations emphasising the inclusion of the interests of other regions of the world and groups of countries rather than representing the interests of the "collective West". • We have numerous allies, and I have no doubt that we will have more of them which will contribute to democratising international relations, where every nation will have a rightful place of its own in global affairs based on its fair and actual contribution to the global economy, politics, and security system, as opposed to blackmail, threats, and ultimatums used by the West. 🌍 During the second Russia-Africa Summit, there were numerous plenary sessions and bilateral contacts with individual sub-regional African associations. <...> This is one of the main items on the agenda, including the implementation of the Declaration and Action Plan adopted at the second Summit. ✍️ President of Russia Vladimir Putin's interview to Xinhua News Agency ahead of his state visit to the People’s Republic of China (May 15, 2024) Key talking points: 🇷🇺🇨🇳 #RussiaChina partnership has always relied on the principles of equality and trust, mutual respect for the sovereignty and consideration of each other's interests. A special and prominent role in the development of our relations has belonged to wise and shrewd politicians and state leaders, such as Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China. • This unprecedented level of strategic partnership between our countries determined my choice of China as the first state to be visited after the official inauguration as the President of the Russian Federation. • October 1 marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The country is approaching this significant historical date with outstanding achievements, which we welcome as old, reliable and time-tested friends. The USSR was the first to recognize the PRC on the second day of its existence. • Russia-China ties as they are today, are free from the influence of either ideology or political trends. Their multidimensional development is an informed strategic choice based on the wide convergence of core national interests, profound mutual trust, strong public support and sincere friendship between the peoples of the two countries. 📈 Trade and economic relations between our countries are developing at a fast pace, showing strong immunity to external challenges and crises. Over the past five years, we have doubled the Russia-China turnover: it reached $227.8 billion last year, against $111 billion in 2019. • President of China Xi Jinping and I decided to declare 2024 and 2025 cross years of culture between Russia and China, so as to implement this large‑scale project in conjunction with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. 📄 Read in full

⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the statements by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk 💬 We have took note of the press release of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published on May 7 with the assessments of its head Volker Türk regarding the situation of journalists in Russia. The High Commissioner’s activity has long lacked objectivity and impartiality required by UN General Assembly Resolution 48/141, however this time the degree of his statements’ political bias is really outrageous and inappropriately arrogant. In defiance of his mandate Volker Türk allowed himself utterly politicized, biased and lopsided interpretations of the situation in the media pluralism and free access to information in our country, and did not shy away from gross distortions, misrepresentations and unsubstantiated accusations. In his ill-concealed desire to follow in the wake of the Collective West’s anti-Russian rhetoric that international official broke out with a libel that has nothing to do with the real situation. And at that the High Commissioner has never showed such zeal in dealing with mass evidence of oppressions against Russian and Russian-language media in the West, reprisals against undesirable reporters in the Baltic countries and Moldova, cruel crimes and terrorist acts by Kiev regime against Russian journalists, public figures and publicists. We have yet to see a substantive response to any of our numerous appeals to Volker Türk regarding these gross violations, which just fuel our suspicions about the bias of his conduct and complete loss of basic ideas of good faith in implementing his mandate as the above UN General Assembly resolution requires. ❗️ We reject point blank the High Commissioner’s statements both in form and in substance. We insist on his strict compliance with all the requirements for an international official of such level, primarily in terms of impartiality and objectivity. We are calling on him to appropriately respond to all crimes and violations with respect to media and journalists regularly reported to him, including by the Russian side.

⚔️ The Battle of Stalingrad (July 17, 1942—February 2, 1943) was one of the most important battles in military history, and a true turning point in World War II. The resilience, courage and heart-wrenching personal stories that emerged from the Battle continue to resonate with Russian youth, inspiring a sense of pride and gratitude for Soviet heroes who fiercely fought to save our Fatherland from the Nazi Germany's invaders. 🎥 To commemorate the heroism and selflessness of Stalingrad's defenders Russian youth and MGIMO University students, members of the patriotic project "From Heart to Heart", made a documentary "Immortal Stalingrad", featuring a brief historical account of the Battle, examples of exploits of the Soviet soldiers and personal stories of the survivors of those tragic and heroic days.

🗓 On May 11, 1939, Soviet Union and Mongolia fended off militarist Japan invasion, securing victory at the Khalkhin Gol River.   In 1936, the Japanese government adopted the Fundamental Principles of National Policy, which outlined plans for the full conquest of China and subsequent military offensives into Mongolia and the Soviet Union.   To execute its expansionist strategies, Japan sought support from Nazi Germany, solidifying their alliance with the signing of the Anti-Comintern Pact on November 25, 1936.   🤝 Considering the possibility of a Japanese attack on the Mongolian People’s Republic and the use of its territory as a launching pad for aggression against the USSR, the Soviet and Mongolian governments signed a Protocol of Mutual Assistance on March 12, 1936.   On July 7, 1937, Japan initiated a full-scale war against China. This further complicated the relations between Moscow and Tokyo, leading to heightened tensions, which boiled over in 1938 into an armed conflict along the Soviet-Manchurian border near Lake Khasan. ⚔️ The Khalkhin Gol River conflict erupted when Japanese troops entered the area and opened fire at the Mongolian border guards. The Red Army swiftly intervened to support their Mongolian allies.   Japan’s invasion of Mongolia was also driven by a desire for retaliation following the unsuccessful confrontation at Lake Khasan. It was also a strategy to compel the Soviet Union to withdraw support for China.   📄 In collaboration with the Mongolian forces, the Red Army successfully repelled the Japanese invasion and by late August, expelled them from Mongolian territory. On September 16, an agreement was reached between the Soviet Union, the Mongolian People’s Republic, and Japan to cease hostilities.   ❗️ The victory of the USSR and their Mongolian allies carried a long-term influence on the dynamics of World War II. The Red Army’s triumph at Khalkhin Gol compelled the Japanese to abandon their plans for a major assault on the USSR. #KhalkhinGol85

🎖 On May 9, 1945, the Medal 'For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945' was established by the Order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The idea of introducing a medal to commemorate the end of the war was raised as early as October 1944 when the Nazi German defeat became inevitable. Work on the design began on May 5, 1945. A total of 20 designs were submitted, with the one by the artists Romanov and Andrianov chosen at the end. The round 32-mm medal was made of brass. Its obverse side showed the profile bust of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin with the inscription, “Our Cause is Right — we won”. The reverse side showed the full name of the medal. ⬛️🟧 The medal ribbon was fashioned in black and orange. It was the St George’s Ribbon that later became the symbol of the Victory of the Soviet People in the Great Patriotic War. 📃 According to the Regulations on the Medal, it was awarded to all military personnel and civilian personnel who served in the ranks of the Red Army, Navy and NKVD troops on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War or ensured victory through their efforts in military districts; and to all military personnel and civilian personnel who served during the Great Patriotic War in the ranks of the active Red Army, Navy and NKVD troops, but who were discharged due to wounds, illness and injury, as well as those who were transferred by decision of state and party organisations to other positions outside the army. The for Medal for Victory over Germany was the most common state insignia in the Soviet Union with the total number of recipients reaching almost 15 million people. ☝️ #InterestingFact: The Medal 'For Victory over Germany' shows Stalin looking left, towards Berlin, while the Medal 'For Victory over Japan' shows him looking right, towards Tokyo. 💬 Excerpt from a comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on marking 10 years since the May 2, 2014, tragedy in Odessa:
We are confident that the day when Odessa will throw off the yoke of the neo-Banderites and once again become a truly free city and home to people of different ethnicities who will live in peace and accord is not far off.

Russia & China have taken turns in hosting this event for a number of years. #RussiaChina
