Myelin sheaths speed up electrical transmission via two key mechanisms: Myelin sheaths provide insulation for electricity traveling along an axon fiber, and I would assume that this so due to the relative strength of the bonds in the phospholipids/cholesterol, which prevents electricity from being transferred to other molecules surrounding the axon. This causes electrical transmission to be faster and more efficient, and im sure you've heard of the age-old comaprison of the myelin sheath to the plastic insulation surrounding a wire (please refer to the comment below this for an explanation on why this analogy is not perfect, however) In addition, there are periodic segements in the myelin sheath termed "Nodes of Ranvier". Nodes of ranvier speed up transmission as they contain voltage gated calcium channels, which cause the node to take in calcium when exposed to an action potential. When calcium enters a node of ranvier, the electrochemical gradient between the interior and exterior of the node turns positive, which in effect "chases" an already existing action potential at the node to be propagated forward due to the interaction of two positive signals (positive repels positive, etc.) This pattern occurs with many more nodes of ranvier downstream of said action potential until the signal reaches its target dendritic spine. Re think taking cholesterol medicine...
