A powerful mudflow (a mixture of water, mud, rocks, and debris) swept through the Himalayan valley of the Bhote Koshi River (Lhende Khola) in the Rasuwa district of Nepal, crossing into Chinese territory and impacting the Gyirong Port border crossing. Shortly before the event (approximately 7 minutes prior), seismologists (including the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ and the USGS) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4. The mudflow temporarily blocked the river channel, creating a dam. When the dam broke, a powerful flood surged downstream, carrying a large amount of debris. There are already 400 people missing, including hundreds of tourists.
