Organum Electronics – Darcknes Die Stadt, 2023 In 2018, after an apparent ~8 year hiatus, David Jackman/Organum/Organum Electronics commenced a steady stream of releases all but the first of which have essentially the same cover (all white with black text featuring the project name diagonally from the top left to the bottom right corner and the title diagonally crossing it diagonally from the lower left to the top right corner, with some variances of font sizes) and consist of a similarly constricted set of sound sources (piano, a bell, ravens, a dense wall of electronics, etc.) While AMM's albums have been described as "alike or unalike as trees," Jackman's recent works are more akin to just a few trees reassembled and reorganized to different extents. The project has always illustrated an economy of means, but this current era narrows that down to some very specific elements. Продолжение в комментариях. (С) Greg Kelley

Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges – Clube Da Esquina Odeon, 1972 #albumweek A powder keg of creative energy from the hub of a creative collective, this fantastic double LP features 21 tracks ranging from 28 seconds to 5 minutes & 22 seconds. Fragments, interludes and full-fledged songs flow together bound by great songwriting, arrangements, singing and playing. Besides the two names on the marquee, a number of people contribute to the songwriting, arrangements and playing, making this a collective statement but without lacking any of the cohesiveness that that may imply. I'd place this one alongside any peak of modern pop a la Sgt. Pepper/Pet Sounds/whatever else people put in this category. (С) Greg Kelley

Olivier Messiaen – Par Lui-Même EMI Classics, 1992 #albumweek Originally released in 1978 under the title L'Œuvre D'Orgue and originally recorded in 1957, these mono recordings of Messiaen performing all (at the time) of his works for organ sound like they come from another planet if not another galaxy. The acoustics of the church in which they were recorded certainly add to this as does Messiaen's fluid sense of time, no less the sound of the pipe organ itself with Messiaen's dense & mystical harmonies. I have a more modern recording of Messiaen's complete organ works, as well, and I love that one too, but the specificities of this one set it apart. (С) Greg Kelley

Heinrich von Meissen – Frauenlob Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, 2000 #albumweek I find that a lot of early music fits into my idea of in-betweenness in that the rules had not been codified yet. This realization of the late medieval poet's work by Sequentia is a great illustration of the effectiveness of economies of means - featuring 5 male voices, 6 female voices and harp accompaniment - the first half of the recording is for male voices only and the second half is for female voices only. When the handoff takes place on the eighth track (which starts with the male voices and is finished by the female voices,) it's a particularly revelatory moment. Beyond that, the simplicity of the arrangements highlights the quality of the voices while the monophonic tonality highlights the quality of the melodic lines, all to powerful effect. Clara Iannotta – Earthing Wergo, 2020 #albumweek 4 tracks of the Jack Quartet straddling the sound worlds of more "academic" composers like Sciarrino & Lachenmann with the more "unschooled" textures of early Organum. I'm always trying to reconcile these two parts of my own brain, so discovering the crystalline, breathy, terse, otherworldly work of Clara Iannotta has been a real breath of fresh air. It also acts as a great introduction to the work of the late Dorothy Molloy from whose poems all of Iannotta's pieces get their titles. (С) Greg Kelley

Bobby Hutcherson – Dialogue Blue Note, 1965 In-between things, as noted above, are particularly appealing to me. I tend to like the search for a sound as opposed to the full-fledged arrival. And after years of preferring less "musical," more sound-based jazz, I came around to mid/late Blue Note as a prime example of in-betweenness as artists like Bobby Hutcherson and Andrew Hill (who wrote 3/5 of the pieces on this album) pushed from straight ahead bop/post-bop to something freer. Peter Green – The End Of The Game Reprise, 1970 #albumweek Hot on the heals of leaving Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green recorded this loose, raw instrumental record that's much more of a jam (and I use that term with the full pros & cons it entails) than what he had just recently left behind. Six tracks of varying groove & direction/directionlessness, it contains some truly searing guitar playing from Green and some propulsive go-for-brokeness amongst his collaborators when they're not opting for more spacious textures. While this record doesn't hit the heights of a Green Manalishi or the sublimity of an Albatross, like Green's best playing, it has an unresolved, searching quality and an uncertainty about it that can be transcendent. It's not a record that's a definitive example of something, but a harder to define example of something in-between various worlds. (С) Greg Kelley

Для себя выделю Passport To Satori с Алексом Нилсоном. Общаемся с Грегом с октября 2023 года, и долго решали, будет это интервью или еще какой формат.
