It’s often said that no one who’s watched a loved one in pain could oppose the Assisted Suicide Bill. It just isn’t true. Many people have endured exactly that heartbreaking experience and still have serious, principled concerns about this Bill. Florence Eshalomi MP describes here how she cared for her mother, who had Sickle Cell Anaemia. She says: “As a teenager I would be by her side, when she was in excruciating pain.” Despite this, she is against the Bill, arguing “we should be helping people to live comfortable, pain-free lives on their own terms, before we think about making it easier for them to die.” The vote could be as soon as Friday 13 June - and will be very close.
