Eskom, South Africa's state-owned power utility, is promoting the use of smart meters to manage electricity demand and improve its financial sustainability. Smart meters enable real-time monitoring of electricity consumption and can provide users with detailed information on their usage patterns, allowing them to make more informed decisions about when and how they use electricity. Eskom hopes that smart meters will help to reduce overall electricity demand, particularly during peak hours, and thereby reduce the need for load shedding. The company is also exploring the use of demand response programs, which incentivize customers to reduce their electricity usage during times of high demand in exchange for financial rewards or other benefits. However, the rollout of smart meters in South Africa has been slow and controversial, with critics arguing that the costs of installation and maintenance outweigh the potential benefits. The cost of these smart meters is said to cost a total of $16 billion over a period of 4 years.
