Roughness and Toughness — Pst. Dr. James O. Adeyanju The two words above sound like homophones but alas they are different. Their meanings are assumed in this short piece. The former leads to the latter. Without the former the latter cannot be realized. One stands for the "cross(es)" of life while the other denotes the ensuing "glory" hereafter. Without the inclusion of a sinful life, if anyone desires toughness in life, he/she cannot avoid the rough road of life. The roughness involves all sorts of things that might serve as distraction one way or the other. Roughness occurs in form of disappointments, ridicules, insults, etc. sometimes sicknesses, barrenness, hunger, retrenchment, etc. One stands in need of God-sent courage for the transformation of their inherent roughness to becoming a tough person in life. Brethren, my appeal is, Do not shun the rough path. That was the route taken by biblical figures such as Joseph, Isaac, Apostles Peter and Paul, Daniel, the Three Hebrew Boys, Ruth, Esther and many others in yesteryears, nonetheless minus sinful life (I repeat again!!!). These individuals became tough characters, prepared for higher and noble areas of life. Even for our Lord Jesus Christ, the path to glory would never be smooth but rough. See Luk. 24:46 (cf. Heb. 5:8, 9). "Christ must suffer many things before He would enter His glory." Please, ask for Divine Grace when passing through life's roughness. But hereafter you will be toughened to face better and glorious part of life.
