An excerpt from a documentary depicting Arno Breker’s 2 monumental statues of “Der Fackelträger” / “Die Partei” - The Torchbearer / The Party and “Der Schwertträger” / “Die Wehrmacht” - The Sword Bearer / The Army. These stood outside and flanked the grand entrance in the Court of Honour of The New Reich Chancellery. These were the most famous bronze monumental statues (with a height of 3,2m) created by Breker, commissioned by Albert Speer in 1938. Jennifer Mundy of the Tate in London said “these two were the cornerstones of the Reich’s spirit and power.”

Excellent elaboration of the muscles and superficially modelled study of the head, the smooth plinth signed by the artist with “A. Breker”. Original grey-black marble plinth with minor chippings. Overall height 41 cm. The study offered here already shows all major elements of the corresponding monumental figure: a frontal alignment with the spectator, the close study of arm and leg movement. Breker draped a cloth over both shoulders of the youth missing in the final version of the sculpture.
