*NUMBER FOUR*
*There is no greater threat to the existence of mankind than that posed by science.*
(Chief Speaker — Against the Motion)
Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate Timekeeper, Co-debaters, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good day. I stand before you as the chief speaker against the motion that There is no greater threat to the existence of mankind than that posed by science. I firmly disagree with this claim because, rather than being a threat, science is one of the greatest blessings to humanity. It is a powerful tool that has improved life, solved problems and shaped the modern world for the better.
To begin with, science has revolutionised medicine and increased life expectancy. Diseases that once wiped out entire populations such as smallpox, polio and measles have been conquered through vaccines and research. Today, surgeries, blood transfusions and organ transplants save millions of lives every year. Without science, simple infections could kill, childbirth would be dangerous and survival after accidents would be nearly impossible. Is something that preserves life truly the greatest threat to mankind? Certainly not.
Secondly, science drives technological advancement and global development. The phones in our hands, the cars we drive, the electricity that powers our homes and even the internet that connects the world are products of scientific discovery. These inventions have made communication faster, transportation easier and information more accessible. Science has transformed agriculture through improved seedlings, irrigation systems and mechanised farming—allowing nations to produce food in large quantities. Surely, a world without science would be backward, unproductive and filled with suffering.
Furthermore, science has contributed greatly to environmental protection. Through research, we now understand climate change, renewable energy, waste recycling and eco-friendly technology. Solar panels, electric vehicles and water purification systems are scientific solutions created to protect the earth. Science is not the enemy—rather, it provides the answers we need to preserve the planet.
Ladies and gentlemen, the real threat is not science itself but the misuse of science by human beings. Weapons, pollution and harmful technologies are not created by science; they are created by people who choose to apply scientific knowledge negatively. Science is like a knife—it can slice bread to feed a family or be used as a weapon to harm others. The fault lies not in the knife, but in the hand that holds it.
In addition, science offers hope for the future. With new discoveries in space exploration, artificial intelligence, genetics and sustainable energy, mankind is advancing toward a more comfortable and secure world. We can cure more diseases, build safer cities, improve education, solve global hunger and explore life beyond earth. Science is opening doors that ignorance once kept locked.
In conclusion, I stand firmly against the motion. Science is not the greatest threat to mankind; it is one of our greatest assets. What we must fear is not science, but ignorance, greed and misuse of knowledge. If applied responsibly, science will continue to shape a healthier, wealthier and more peaceful world.
Science builds — it does not destroy.
Thank you. 👏
