#Important_notes_ssb_Lecturette #GD_MATERIAL #TO_ALL_LADIES_GENTLEMAN #Daily_lecturette_topic ❗Anti-Satellite Weapons Systems❗ ➡️ Anti-satellites (ASATs) are weapons designed to destroy or disable satellites in orbit. • They can be ground-based, air-based, or space-based. • ASATs can use various methods to attack satellites, including kinetic impact, lasers, and directed energy weapons. ♦️In March 2019, India successfully conducted Mission Shakti, an anti-satellite missile test, making India the fourth country in the world to have demonstrated the ability to destroy a satellite in orbit. ➡️ Types of Anti-Satellite Weapons ⤵️ ✔️ ASATs are broadly classified into two types: those that employ brute force and those that do not. ♦️ Kinetic energy methods: This involves launching a missile that intercepts and physically collides with the target satellite to destroy it. ➡️ The kinetic energy ASATs physically collide with satellites and can reach altitudes. ➡️ These ASATs can be ballistic missiles, drones, and other satellites. ♦️ Non-kinetic methods: They use non-physical attacks such as cyber-attacks, jamming, and even lasers to blind satellites without physically destroying them. ➡️ All of these attacks can be launched from the air, low orbit, or even ground installations. ❗Need for ASAT Technology❗ ✅ National security: ASAT weapons are developed with the goal of protecting national security interests such as safeguarding critical infrastructure, military communications, and intelligence-gathering capabilities that rely on satellites. ✅ Destroying retired satellites: There are many satellites in space right now, many of which have outlived their usefulness and are orbiting aimlessly. ➡️ ASATs can be used to destroy these satellites. ✅ Deterrence: The possession of ASAT capabilities can act as a deterrent to potential adversaries. Knowing that a nation can defend its space assets and retaliate if its satellites are targeted may discourage hostile actions in space. ➡️ For instance, China was not impressed by India's ASAT demonstration which neutralises China's counter-space capabilities. ✅ Technological advancements: Advances in missile and space technology make it feasible for more nations to develop ASAT capabilities. ❗Countries with ASAT Technology❗ ♦️ASATs were first developed during the Cold War era. ➡️ They have never been used in warfare, but have been used to remove decommissioned satellites. ❗Besides India, three other countries have successfully demonstrated anti-satellite (ASAT) technology in tests; the United States, Russia, and China. 📚 USA - Bold Orion air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) 📚 Russia (Former Soviet Union) - Nudol Missile 📚 China - SC-19 ASAT missile ❗Implications of Anti-Satellite Weapons❗ ✅ Space debris: Destructive ASAT tests result in the creation of a substantial amount of space debris, posing a severe threat to other satellites and spacecraft in space, increasing the risk of collisions. ✅ Kessler Syndrome: It can lead to Kessler Syndrome, a situation where an increasing amount of space debris in orbit leads to a self-sustaining cascade of collisions, creating more debris and making space activities increasingly hazardous. ✅ Race for arms control: The proliferation of ASAT capabilities may lead to an arms race in space, resulting in the weaponisation of space. ✅ International concern: The consequences of ASAT testing, especially in light of the dangers of debris, have prompted calls for a global ban on destructive ASAT tests. 🇮🇳🤝🌍 India & the Gulf Region (Middle East) 🪔 India’s ties with the Gulf region are among the strongest and most dynamic in its foreign policy — rooted in energy security, trade, diaspora, and strategic cooperation. ⸻ ⚡ Energy Partnership • The Gulf remains India’s primary energy source, supplying nearly 60% of its crude oil and gas needs. • Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, and Qatar are major suppliers. • India is diversifying to include long-term LNG contracts and renewable partnerships with Gulf nations. ⸻ 💰 Trade & Investment • The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) collectively stands as one of India’s top trading blocs. • The UAE and Saudi Arabia are key investors in India’s infrastructure, digital economy, and renewable sectors. • Ongoing efforts aim to finalize an India-GCC Free Trade Agreement, expected to boost exports and market access. ⸻ 👷‍♂️ Indian Diaspora Strength • Over 9 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries — one of the largest overseas Indian communities. • They contribute significantly to the host nations’ economies and send massive remittances back to India, strengthening India’s foreign reserves. • Indian embassies and consulates have enhanced welfare mechanisms for migrant workers. ⸻ 🛡️ Strategic & Defence Cooperation • India has built strong defence and maritime partnerships with UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. • Regular joint military exercises, naval port calls, and logistics agreements deepen maritime security in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean Region (IOR). • Collaboration on counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing has also expanded. ⸻ 🌍 Regional & Global Cooperation • India plays a key role in the new I2U2 grouping (India–Israel–UAE–USA), focusing on technology, food security, and clean energy. • The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) announced during G20-2023 aims to enhance connectivity and trade flow between Asia, the Gulf, and Europe. • India balances its relations across the region, engaging both Arab nations and Israel constructively. ⸻ ✨ Cultural & Historical Ties • Centuries-old maritime and cultural exchanges connect India with the Arab world. • Shared traditions, language influences, and inter-community ties make the relationship people-centric, not just policy-driven. ⸻ 🔱 Summary The Gulf region stands as a strategic anchor of India’s West Asia policy — blending: Energy + Trade + Diaspora + Security + Cultural heritage. It symbolizes India’s Act West Policy, complementing the Act East Policy in Asia. ⸻ #India #GulfRelations #MiddleEast #ForeignPolicy #I2U2 #IMEC #WestAsia #GlobalDiplomacy #SSBNotes

#Important_currentaffair_for_SSBinterview #Defence_News #GD_Material Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) ◆The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), sometimes known as the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty, is the first legally binding international treaty to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons, with the ultimate goal of their entire elimination. ◆It was adopted on July 7, 2017, made available for signature on September 20, 2017, and went into effect on January 22, 2021. ▪️Aim of  Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons ●The treaty outlaws the development, testing, manufacture, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use, and the threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as support and encouragement to the forbidden actions, for those countries that are party to it. ●It offers a time-bound framework for discussions leading to the verified and irreversible cessation of nuclear weapons programs for nuclear-armed states that join the treaty. ●According to proponents, the nuclear-weapons-ban treaty will represent an "unambiguous political commitment" to achieve and preserve a nuclear-weapon-free world. It was not intended, however, to encompass all of the legal and technical procedures required to reach the point of elimination, unlike a comprehensive nuclear weapons pact. ●Nuclear weapons, unlike chemical, biological, anti-personnel landmines, and cluster munitions, do not have a broad and universal prohibition. The 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) only has partial bans, and nuclear-weapon-free zone accords only prohibit nuclear weapons in specific geographical areas. ▪️Reactions from the Nuclear-Armed States: ◆Nuclear-weapon powers and several NATO members have been vocal in their opposition to the project from the start. Although the US and UK attended the 2014 Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons, leaders from Washington and other nuclear-weapon states boycotted the working group sessions and the 2017 treaty discussions. ◆These countries argue that ratifying the CTBT will divert focus away from other nonproliferation and disarmament activities, such as negotiating a fissile material cutoff pact. They are concerned that the nuclear non proliferation treaty, by allowing states to "forum shop," or pick between the two treaties, will undermine the NPT and its considerable safety provisions. ✔️What is India's stand on the Treaty? ●The pact was rejected by India for two main reasons. ●It was not negotiated in the appropriate forum or method: First, since it was not negotiated in the appropriate venue or manner. ●India feels that the Conference on Disarmament, a UN body comprised of 65 nations that make decisions based on consensus, is the best platform for addressing complicated aspects of nuclear disarmament. India believes it is vital to include all parties in this discussion. ●Failure to do so could result in a conclusion that is unsatisfactory to important actors, as the TPNW appears to have been. ●Lack of attention to important areas: India's second criticism has been that it has paid little attention to concerns of verification and compliance. ●The treaty encourages NWPs to join by removing nuclear weapons "immediately from operational status and destroying them in line with a legally enforceable, time-bound plan." ●These terminologies, however, are not defined. The pact also makes no provision for who will monitor and certify that the elimination process is proceeding as planned, or how non-compliance will be dealt with. For more @ssbgeneraldiscussion
