What writing is not: note to self Reading: With a constant interaction with words it is so easy to feel like reading is but writing. Despite the similarity in the act, reading is not writing. It is the consumption of another’s writing. Reading multiple books might make one’s writing better but it is not writing. Discussing books: Slicing ideas, discussing metaphors and allegories, finding patterns in another writer’s ways and relating them to one’s life is an important work. It is an intimate work. But it is not writing. Talking about writing: Talking about struggling to write is a common thing to find support. One might find support but if one hasn’t written through that support it still is not writing. Watching films and analysing: Another mimicry. As writers engage in such acts to help them in writing but also because it might as well be a peer’s work, it is very easy to fall into this trap. It is not writing. Talking about publishing: Publish what? In summary, being close to the fire but not jumping into it is not burning! Jump! What writing is: Writing! @coffeeandscribblings

There is nothing more underrated than Indian cinema. Although I am not at all a cinephile I have seen people who identify as such and they talk about French cinema and Iranian cinema. Even films made in other languages. I follow videobet although I never got the chance to be there. I see their excellent movie recommendations and enjoyed some on my own when I got the chance. But Indian cinema! People think of bollywood when Indian cinema is mentioned but honestly excellent movies are made in languages that are not Hindi and outside Bollywood as well. Sharing this after the genius of Rituprano Ghosh on Chitrangada. I am also back to studying Hindi. I realized my childhood self is my most authenthic self so embracing everything I used to do. I learnt the technique I use to learn reading is using something called sight words. So far, I know 'hai' 'naam' 'aurat' and things like that. It is like how we used to watch the MBCs so much that we knew some arabic words and how they are written. Now I only remember 'no'... لا

My first memory of Birtukan Midekssa, I think, is just her waving to young people during the 1997th (2005 G.C) elections. Then a looming presence of boldness and defiance for 20 years. So many recounts of her bravery ever since I have known her. Yesterday was just another one of such. Birtukan Midekssa launched her first memoir መመለስ at Skylight hotel. What an honour to be there. Yet another witness that true politicians are made from our neighborhoods. @coffeeandscribblings
