Makiwara (巻藁) is a traditional striking post used in karate training to develop proper technique, focus, and power. It is usually a wooden board or post with a padded striking surface set at a slight angle. Practitioners strike it with fists, elbows, or kicks to strengthen the wrists and knuckles and to train hip-driven power and snap.

Papuren(八歩連)Kata
Papuren (also pronounced Happoren or Paipuren, meaning “Eight Steps at the Same Time” or "Eight Continuous Steps") is a classical kata of Chinese origin that entered Okinawan karate through the Naha-te tradition. The name signifies “Eight Continuous Steps,” reflecting its flowing, linked movements. Historians trace its roots to Southern Chinese White Crane boxing and other Fujian styles that emphasize rooted stances, sharp breathing, and a blend of hard and soft techniques. The form was introduced to Okinawa by White Crane master Wu Xian Hui (Go Kenki) from Fujian, who shared his art with prominent Okinawan masters, including Kenwa Mabuni, founder of Shito-ryu. Mabuni learned three katas—Papuren, Nipaipo, and Haffa—from Go Kenki, then modified and simplified them before adding them to the Shito-ryu syllabus.

Sanchin (三戦)
The kanji keep the original kata name “三戦,” but when we talk about the stance we focus on its shape, which resembles an hourglass. The meaning “hourglass” is descriptive, not a literal translation of the kanji.

Shitoryu Karate
Pt. 5
Breathing in Shito-ryu is more than inhaling and exhaling. Ibuki and Nagare breathing build focus and power, linking mind and body to every technique. Shito-ryu remains a true fusion of Shuri-te and Naha-te, with added influence from White Crane and Tomari-te, keeping Kenwa Mabuni’s legacy alive in traditional, budo, and sport karate worldwide.
Shitoryu Karate
Pt. 4
Mabuni’s vision continued through his son Kenei Mabuni and masters such as Manzo Iwata, carried forward by Shitokai and the World Shito-ryu Karate Federation. Recognized as one of the four major styles by the Japan Karate-do Federation, Shito-ryu thrives across Europe, the Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas. Its champions excel in both kata and kumite, proving the style’s mix of speed, power, and precision.
Shitoryu Karate
Pt. 3
Shito-ryu is famous for its breadth. With more than 50 kata, it serves as a living encyclopedia of Okinawan Karate. Its stances range from low and grounded to high and natural, allowing smooth adaptation for both kata and kumite.
Shitoryu Karate
Pt. 2
Mabuni preserved centuries of tradition while uniting Itosu’s speed and precision with Higaonna’s strength and flow. From the Shuri-te lineage it inherits quick linear techniques and mobile stances. From the Naha-te lineage it gains rooted stances, heavy power, and deep breathing methods. He also drew influence from Master Go Kenki of the White Crane system and from the Tomari-te tradition. The result is a balanced art: speed with power, fluidity with stability.
Shitoryu Karate
Pt. 1
Shito-ryu Karate carries the legacy of two masters. Founded in 1931 by Kenwa Mabuni, it blends the core of Okinawan Karate. Mabuni trained under two great teachers and honored them in the style’s name: Shi from Ankō Itosu, who refined powerful kata and spread Karate through education, and Tō from Kanryō Higaonna, the Naha-te master known for strong stances, circular motion, and controlled breathing.
