🕸️A group of senators in Liberia, situated along the coast of western Africa, has proposed to relocate the country’s capital city Monrovia due to recurring flash floods. 🕸️The development came just weeks after torrential rains caused flash floods across Liberia, affecting more than 50,000 people. Among the worst affected regions was Monrovia, which is home to 1.5 million people, and lies on the country’s Atlantic coast. 🕸️The primary reason is rising sea levels. 🕸️By 2030, the Greater Monrovia District — it contains the capital city Monrovia — is expected to witness a sea level rise of 16 cm, according to a 2021 report by the World Bank. This would put nearly 675,000 people and 9,500 hectares of land at risk. 🕸️The problem that Monrovia is facing is a global issue. The sea level rise has more than doubled from 0.07 inches or 0.18 centimetres per year in 1993 to the current rate of 0.17 inches or 0.42 centimetres per year.

Australia took steps to ban mining at an Indigenous site surrounded by Kakadu National Park, which is home to one of the world’s largest deposits of high-grade uranium. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the heritage-listed national park would be extended to include the Jabiluka site, which has long been in the sights of mining companies seeking to exploit it against the wishes of its Indigenous custodians, the Mirarr people. The Jabiluka site drew particular attention in 2017 when archaeologists discovered a buried trove of stone axes and tools nearby, dating them at tens of thousands of years old.

Major Findings 🌏 Total Forest & Tree Cover: 🟢 25.17% of India’s geographical area (8,27,357 sq km). 🌲 Forest Cover: 7,15,343 sq km (21.76%). 🌴 Tree Cover: 1,12,014 sq km (3.41%). 📈 Increase in Coverage —Total increase: 1,445 sq km compared to 2021. 🌲 Forest Cover: +156 sq km. 🌴 Tree Cover: +1,289 sq km.
