🌸 Jitiya Vrat Story 🌸 Long ago, Jimutvahana, prince of the Vidyadharas, renounced his throne and devoted his life to helping others. At that time, Garuda (the divine bird, vehicle of Vishnu) had a pact that every day one youth from the Naga clan (serpent race) would be offered as food. When Jimutvahana saw a Naga mother weeping for her only son Shankhachuda, he decided to save the child. He laid himself on the rock where Garuda came to eat. Garuda, impressed by Jimutvahana’s courage and sacrifice, realized such a man could not be killed. Touched by his selflessness, Garuda spared him and promised never to harm the Nagas again. This story, narrated by King Harsha in his Sanskrit play Nagananda, is the origin of Jitiya Vrat, observed by mothers for the long life of their children.
