'Āshūrah & the Killing of Ḥusayn ibn 'Alī رضي الله عنهما by Shaykh 'Abdurrazzāq al-Badr حفظه الله

💎 Which is of lesser harm, the absence of hearing or the absence of sight? Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: And this is built upon another foundation, that is which faculty is more integral, the faculty of hearing or the faculty of seeing? We have mentioned the differing regarding the two in what has preceded in this book. And we have mentioned the opinions of the people and their proofs and their conclusions. So which of the two faculties are more integral and which of the two are more harmful in its absence? That which is befitting regarding this affair is that the absence of sight is more harmful in regards to one’s worldly life, but the safer of the two in regards to one’s religion, and has a more praiseworthy outcome. The absence of hearing is the less harmful of the two in terms of one’s worldly life but is more ignorant in regards to one’s religion and the worst of the two in regards to one’s outcome. Indeed the absence of hearing means the absence of admonishments and the absence of advice and the doors of beneficial knowledge are obstructed while the paths of desires which are attained by way of sight are opened for him. He will not attain from knowledge that which will cause him to withhold from his desires. So its harms in regards to his religion is more while the harms of the worldly life is more in regards to the blind. Due to this, there was never a deaf companion, but there were some companions who were blind. And only a few of the Awliya of Allah were trialed with deafness while many were trialed with blindness. So this is a decisive statement regarding this affair. So the harm of the deaf is in regards to the religion while the harm of the blind is in regards to the worldly life. And the one who has both hearing and sight is the one whom Allah has granted well-being for and has blessed him with his hearing and sight and has made him an inheritor of it. مفتاح دار السعادة ٢/٧٥٥
