In the wake of the two recent attacks that took place in Sydney, there has been a lot of dystopian rhetoric about toughening up legislation to prevent things like this happening again and ensuring the safety and freedom of Australians. And of course its just that, rhetoric. Legislation alone cannot prevent crime, legislation in of itself cannot make you safe, more legislation does not make one more free, it makes one more enslaved. The more legislation there is, the more restrictions on your freedom there are. However, The ALP government seem intent on never allowing a tragedy go to waste. Problem, Reaction, Solution. We have seen this hegalian dialectic method play out numerous times over the last 4 years and it always seems as if the solution to a problem, was always the agenda of the government, before the problem even existed.
