🎉 Kudos to Team Beep Beep 🚗 for their outstanding achievement in the JTC Future of Mobility Challenge 2023! 🚀 You’ve made all of us incredibly proud! 😁 The students 🎓, who were from multidisciplinary backgrounds, proposed integrating IoT wearable tech ⌚️ with physical infrastructures 🏙 for real-time wayfinding 🗺 and ride-hailing vehicle authentication 🚖, underpinned by an ultra-wideband network 🌐. “Everyone was balancing their commitments, with one of our members even flying off to Canada 🍁 for NOC just before the final pitch. We had to shift our dynamics to suit the nature of online meetings 🖥,” team member Jai Lulla, a year 3 Computer Science student 💻, remarked on the challenges the team faced. The Therac-25 tragedy in the 80s taught us how dangerous software bugs ☢️ can be. And now, 40 years later, software applications have become increasingly complex, making it even more difficult to detect and correct bugs. Enter assistant professor Umang Mathur, a bug-hunting hero working tirelessly to detect and eliminate data race bugs in concurrent systems. 🐞 💡 Using cutting-edge techniques like Race Property Tester (RPT), which samples events to reduce analysis time, asst prof Mathur is pushing the boundaries of software reliability. On 12 April 2023, 🗓 #NUSComputing held the 22nd School of Computing Term Project Showcase (STePS) 🖥🎉. Some 800 guests 👥 attended this developer centric event featuring about 60 innovative student projects 🚀 across 5 tracks ranging from Game Development 🎮 to Machine Learning 🤖. The projects received votes from #NUSComputing faculty 👩‍🏫, industry guests 🌐, and representatives from various government agencies 🏛 to pick the winning submissions 🏆. Besides giving students the opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity 🌟, STePS also connected them with key industry figures 🔑 and potential investors 💼. What happens when you trick AI 🤖 into doing something it didn’t expect? According to #NUSComputing’s Assistant Professor Trevor E. Carlson, this can lead to data leaks and a loss of privacy 💻. This is what inspired Asst Prof Trevor and PhD students Arash Pashrashid and Ali Hajiabadi to develop Spectify, a detector which identifies and prevents side channel attacks. Since then, their findings have been published in a paper titled, “Fast, Robust and Accurate Detection of Cache-based Spectre Attack Phases”.
