China's Great Green Wall project has planted around 66 billion trees since 1978 to help slow the expansion of the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts, reduce soil erosion, and restore degraded land.
A new study found that these planted forests are increasing their leaf growth about 66% faster than nearby natural forests. After accounting for factors such as forest age, climate, and tree species, the planted forests still grew about 4.6% faster than natural forests.
Researchers say the rapid growth is largely due to the forests being relatively young, the use of fast-growing tree species such as poplar and eucalyptus, and active forest management. Planted forests now account for about 7% of the world's forest cover, making them an increasingly important part of global reforestation efforts.
The researchers say the faster growth may allow these forests to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) more rapidly during their early decades of growth. However, they also emphasize that natural forests remain essential for long-term carbon storage, biodiversity, and healthy ecosystems.
The findings were published in Geophysical Research Letters.
Prepare for the battle 😎

Japan's dream of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on June 30. In the Round of 32, Japan faced Brazil at Houston Stadium and made a brilliant start. In the 29th minute, Kaishu Sano scored the opening goal, giving Japanese fans hope that their team could pull off a famous victory.
For much of the match, Japan fought with determination and defended well. But Brazil's experience eventually made the difference. In the second half, Casemiro scored a powerful header to level the match. Then, deep into stoppage time, Gabriel Martinelli found the winning goal, giving Brazil a dramatic 2-1 victory and ending Japan's World Cup journey.
After the match, Japan's head coach, Hajime Moriyasu, appeared at the post-match press conference with tears in his eyes. He struggled to hide his disappointment as he spoke to reporters. He said, "I am very frustrated right now, but I want to accept the result... I could not deliver victory as a gift. My ability as a coach was insufficient. I want to say I am truly sorry." Later, he also told ESPN, "As a head coach I told them that I was really sorry that I was not good enough to lead them to that level."
Many fans praised Moriyasu for taking full responsibility instead of making excuses. His emotional apology stood in sharp contrast to South Korea's coach, Hong Myung-bo, who returned home after his team's group-stage elimination without publicly responding to or apologizing to waiting fans. Moriyasu's honesty and humility earned respect from football supporters around the world, even in defeat.
That makes sense 🤨

🇨🇳 CHINA IS USING THE OCEAN TO COOL MASSIVE UNDERWATER DATA CENTERS
China has launched a commercial underwater data center, placing thousands of servers beneath the ocean to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data, and 5G applications. The project represents a new approach to building digital infrastructure.
Instead of relying on traditional energy-intensive cooling systems, the facility uses naturally cool seawater to regulate temperatures. Engineers say this can significantly reduce energy consumption while eliminating the need for freshwater cooling.
Supporters believe underwater data centers could help lower operating costs, improve efficiency, and reduce the environmental footprint of large computing facilities. The concept is attracting growing interest as demand for AI and cloud services continues to surge.
The project highlights how technology companies are exploring unconventional solutions to meet the world's growing computing needs. In this vision of the future, the ocean is becoming more than a resource—it's becoming part of the infrastructure itself.
