Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain network by valuation, has the potential to jump to replace Bitcoin to become the top digital asset, says Ryan Watkins of Messari. The senior research analyst cited a flurry of catalysts that could lead to the so-called flippening event. Firstly, Ethereum’s full protocol upgrade to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work blockchain would lead to introducing a “burn mechanism.” It means the network would pre-algorithmically destroy more ETH tokens than its active supply, leading to better scarcity. Secondly, Mr. Watkins noted that the imminent Ethereum upgrade would make its network more secure than Bitcoin. As a result, it would assume the most active blockchain’s role in the space, attracting new projects and users from the emerging decentralized finance and non-fungible token sector. Crypto artwork has blown up in 2021, with February setting a new all-time high for non-fungible token (NFT) trading volume among top marketplaces and eclipsing the entire tally for 2020 in the process. March may well break that record. NFT projects are coming from all sorts of unique creators, but here’s one that doesn’t even have a fully human origin. Today, Hanson Robotics and iv gallery announced they will launch a series of NFTs based on artwork from Sophia the Robot, an AI-driven humanoid robot with a large social media following and a ”Tonight Show” appearance on its resume. The artwork will drop on March 23 via Gemini’s Nifty Gateway platform. NFTs are digital assets designed to be scarce or unique. They often come in the form of blockchain-based trading cards, collectibles, or artwork. Online broker Robinhood says the number of female cryptocurrency traders on the platform has grown seven-fold compared to the end of 2020. In a blog post, Robinhood acknowledged that female crypto traders remain underrepresented on the platform despite the growth. Robinhood notes that with men accounting for most active traders, the playing field is leveling. This is an indicator cryptocurrencies can play a role in decentralizing power in finance. “Robinhood Crypto compared with our total active customer base, it is notable that 40 percent of Robinhood active women customers are crypto traders,” Robinhood said. The broker partly attributes the rise in women traders to the provision of necessary educational materials. This is the case with the payment giant PayPal, whose CEO recently rolled out plans of integrating cryptocurrency with the payment platform while advancing user features. In a conference call with investors, the head of PayPal Dan Schulman explained that the advancement in functionality is already in motion, highlighting how users of its Venmo app were able to receive their Stimulus check for the first time, directly from the app. The implementation of this new feature indicates that PayPal is paying attention to customers’ needs.
