Act 2, Scene 2 Summary & Analysis Read our modern English translation of this scene. Action and Inaction Theme Icon Appearance vs. Reality Theme Icon Women Theme Icon Religion, Honor, and Revenge Theme Icon Poison, Corruption, Death Theme Icon Themes Key SummaryAnalysis Claudius and Gertrude warmly welcome Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two of Hamletโ€™s childhood friends, to Elsinore. Claudius explains that in light of Hamletโ€™s recent โ€œtransformationโ€ in the time since his fatherโ€™s death, the purpose of Rosencrantz and Guildensternโ€™s visit is to spend time with Hamlet, โ€œdraw him on to pleasures,โ€ and report back to Claudius and Gertrude about whether thereโ€™s anything more sinister bothering Hamlet. Gertrude speaks up and promises to reward the two friends handsomely for helping her and Claudius. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern agree to help the king and queen, and say they hope theyโ€™ll be able to be โ€œpleasant and helpfulโ€ to Hamlet. An attendant escorts them from the room to go find the prince. Though Gertrude and Claudius insist they have brought Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to Elsinore in hopes of cheering Hamlet up, itโ€™s clear that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are pawns in Claudiusโ€™s paranoid attempts to figure out whether Hamlet is onto him. The fact that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern eagerly agree to this bribery suggests that they are not Hamletโ€™s true friends, after all. THEMES Appearance vs. Reality Theme Icon Polonius enters with two pieces of good news. He tells Gertrude and Claudius that the ambassadors from Norway, Voltemand and Cornelius, have returned safely and in good spiritโ€”and then goes on to tell them he has โ€œfound the very cause of Hamletโ€™s lunacy.โ€ Claudius asks for Polonius to tell them both whatโ€™s wrong with Hamlet, but Polonius suggests they meet with the ambassadors first. Polonius knows how to keep Claudius wrapped around his finger, and this passage shows that Polonius is good at securing the kingโ€™s attention in pursuit of his own designs. Itโ€™s clear that, unbeknownst to Claudius, the company he keeps is just as underhanded and dishonest as he has proven to be in his schemes to find out whatโ€™s wrong with Hamlet.Though Gertrude and Claudius insist they have brought Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to Elsinore in hopes of cheering Hamlet up, itโ€™s clear that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are pawns in Claudiusโ€™s paranoid attempts to figure out whether Hamlet is onto him. Act2seen1 People present in the scene: Polonius โ€“ father of Ophelia and trusted counselor of Claudius; Reynaldo โ€“ servant of Polonius; Ophelia โ€“ daughter of Polonius and beloved woman of Hamlet. Place and time of the scene: Polonius house, several weeks later. Main events of the scene: Polonius sends his servant Reynaldo to France to spy on Laertes; Ophelia proclaims that Hamlet is behaving very strange; Short Summary: Polonius gives money and a letter to his servant, Reynaldo and sends him to France. The father gives very clear instructions how Reynaldo should spy on his son: he should not reveal his connection to Laertes family, find well-known Danes in the city and get an opportunity to talk to them. He is then instructed to start a conversation saying that he heard about Laertes but not much. This is supposed to lead the other party to speak about Laertes behavior in Paris. Reynaldo is also expected to watch after Laertes and then report back to the lord. After Reynaldo exits the room, Ophelia enters. She is very worried. She says that Prince Hamlet visited her and looked very disturbed. He was dressed in dirty and undone clothes, his face was pale, his body was shivering, and his eyes were different. The father and the daughter assume that the Prince went insane. Then Ophelia describes in detail the unusual behavior of Hamlet: he grabbed her by the elbow and stared into her face, then shook his head and let out a sad sigh. Polonius is sure that this behavior is the result of his daughter ignoring Hamletโ€™s attention. Ophelia did as she was ordered by her father and stopped accepting Hamletโ€™s letters and meetings. Polonius now thinks that he underestimated Princeโ€™s feelings towards Ophelia and that he is going crazy from unrequited love. He wants his daughter to tell everything to the king.

Act 1, Scene 5 The ghost tells Hamlet that he is Hamlet's father and was murdered by Claudius, who put poison in the napping king's ear. The ghost asks Hamlet to revenge his "most foul, strange, and unnatural murder," and Hamlet agrees without hesitation. The ghost also tells Hamlet that his mother was adulterous with Claudius before the old king died. He makes Hamlet promise that he won't seek revenge on his mother but let her be judged by God.
