He tells Gertrude and Claudius that the ambassadors from Norway, Voltemand and Cornelius, have returned safely and in good spirit—and then goes on to tell them he has “found the very cause of Hamlet’s lunacy.” Claudius asks for Polonius to tell them both what’s wrong with Hamlet, but Polonius suggests they meet with the ambassadors first. Polonius knows how to keep Claudius wrapped around his finger, and this passage shows that Polonius is good at securing the king’s attention in pursuit of his own designs.
