“Add ceftriaxone!”
PLEASE, LET’S STOP USING CEFTRIAXONE LIKE IT CURES EVERYTHING.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
- Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic. It treats certain bacterial infections.
- It does not treat malaria or viral infections.
- Not every bacterial infection requires ceftriaxone.
- Using antibiotics when they are not needed can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
- The right antibiotic depends on the suspected infection, the bacteria involved, the person's age and condition, allergies, and sometimes laboratory results.
- An injection does not automatically mean the medicine is stronger or better than tablets.
WHEN CEFTRIAXONE MAY BE CONSIDERED:
-Physicians may use ceftriaxone for certain serious bacterial infections, depending on the diagnosis and clinical situation.
THE BIG MISTAKE:
Don't say:
“Ceftriaxone is strong, so it will cure whatever is making them sick.”
The question should be:
“What infection am I treating, and is ceftriaxone actually appropriate for it?”
STRONG MEDICINE IS NOT THE SAME AS RIGHT MEDICINE.
And please don't buy or inject ceftriaxone simply because someone online said it is the “strongest” antibiotic.

Mechanism:
Blocks muscarinic (M1) receptors in the CNS → restores the dopamine–acetylcholine balance in the striatum.
🩺 Uses:
Parkinsonism
Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), especially acute dystonia
💊 Administration & Dose:
Route: Oral, IM, or IV
Parkinsonism: 0.5–1 mg once daily, gradually increased; usual 1–2 mg/day
Drug-induced EPS: 1–2 mg once or twice daily
Interactions:
Other anticholinergics → ↑ anticholinergic effects
Antihistamines/TCAs → ↑ dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention
Antipsychotics → may mask/treat EPS
⚠️ Adverse Effects:
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Constipation
Urinary retention
Tachycardia
Confusion
⛔ Precautions:
Use cautiously in elderly patients and those with glaucoma or urinary retention.
🚫 Avoid if:
Narrow-angle glaucoma
GI obstruction
Urinary retention
✅ Antimuscarinic used for drug-induced parkinsonism and acute dystonia.
‼️ Not recommended for tardive dyskinesia; it may worsen it.
