A proposed law to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales has cleared its first parliamentary hurdle after MPs voted 330 to 275, majority 55, to approve it at second reading. The law means some terminally ill people in England and Wales would be given the right to die at a time of their choosing. The debate has reached a fever pitch this week as campaigners and groups on both sides had made their final calls to ministers on Friday morning. Every pensioner household in Scotland will receive a winter fuel payment next year, the Scottish government has announced. Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said those in receipt of qualifying benefits like Pension Credit would get £200 or £300 depending on their age, while all others would get £100. The funds - which are limited to one payment per household - will be paid through a new Scottish Parliament benefit, which will not be ready until late 2025. The Scottish Government is considering whether the speed limit on single-carriageway roads should be reduced to 50mph. A public consultation on the issue will be announced by the transport secretary Fiona Hyslop on Wednesday. Equalities Minister Kaukab Stewart has called for the UK Government to consider a pilot proposal in Scotland which would give people seeking asylum the right to work in some parts of Scotland. The Scottish Right to Work Pilot Proposal proposes a number of changes to current UK policy, including enabling the right to work from six months instead of twelve months, and removing restrictions on the types of work they can undertake. New figures have shown a rise in the number of homeless Scots dying as a result of drugs, with 100 such deaths estimated to have occurred in 2023. National Records of Scotland (NRS) said the total was up from 89 in 2022, with its latest report noting drug misuse deaths accounted for about two-fifths (41%) of all estimated homeless deaths in Scotland last year. However, it said the rise “follows a similar pattern to the general population which saw an increase in drug misuse deaths in 2023 after a fall in 2022”.
