| 5 | Promenades Aeriennes Jardin Baujon, 1817
The 'aerial walks', a roller-coaster built in 1817 in Paris, with two tracks curving down on either side of a central tower; several figures strolling around in the foreground; in the background, at right, a mill; after Garneray; second state, after alterations and addition of a line of inscription.

| 9 | The Triumph of Fame; (reverse) Impresa of the Medici Family and Arms of the Medici and Tornabuoni Families
Giovanni di ser Giovanni Guidi (called Scheggia), ca. 1449
This desco da parto was painted around 1449 by Scheggia, younger brother of Masaccio, to commemorate the birth of Lorenzo de’ Medici. It is the largest known birth tray of its kind.
The front depicts the Triumph of Fame. A winged allegorical figure stands atop a globe, holding a sword in one hand and a blindfolded Cupid in the other. Armored knights raise their right hands in allegiance. A panoramic landscape fills the background. The gilded rim bears the tri-colored feathers of the Medici. Most birth trays of the period showed domestic or biblical scenes. The choice of Fame as subject was deliberate, conceived as an augury of what the child was expected to become.
The reverse carries the heraldic arms of the Medici and Tornabuoni families alongside the personal device of Lorenzo’s father, Piero: a diamond ring, three ostrich feathers, and the motto Semper. Always. The feathers were chosen for their stiffness. They cannot be disheveled no matter how hard the wind blows.
The tray hung in Lorenzo’s private quarters until his death in 1492.

| 10 | Madonna and Child
Carlo Crivelli, ca. 1480
Symbols of good and evil appear throughout this exquisitely rendered painting. While the apples and fly symbolize sin, the cucumber and goldfinch reference redemption and the soul. Flemish art may have inspired the precisely detailed style of this work, one of Crivelli’s most refined pictures. It also showcases his talent for visual tricks: viewers might be tempted to brush away the fly that appears to have landed on the painting. In the distance, the landscape is populated with turbaned figures, possibly Mamluks who in the 1480s controlled the holy city of Jerusalem.
