Use of Past Perfect Continuous Tense 1. To show an action that started in the past and continued up to another point in the past It emphasizes the duration of the action before another past action. Example: She had been teaching for ten years before she retired. The students had been studying for two hours before the test began. 2. To show cause and effect in the past The ongoing action explains the reason for a past condition. Example: He was tired because he had been working all night. The ground was wet as it had been raining. 3. To emphasize how long an action was happening in the past Often used with for and since. Example: I had been waiting for the bus for thirty minutes when it arrived. We had been living in Hyderabad since 2010 before we moved.
