| 3 | 🌼 Design Spotlight: How the Meskel Wof Inspired the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa 🌼
Happy Meskel season! As Adey Abeba blankets the highlands, the yellow bloom also marks the arrival of the Meskel Wof—the seasonal birds that herald this time of year in Ethiopia.
Beyond being a central city landmark, the interior architecture of the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa was built around a biomimetic design concept: translating local birdlife directly into lighting, texture, and color palettes.
Instead of generic modern decor, the interior design explicitly channels two endemic species—the vibrant blue Turaco and the Ethiopian guinea fowl. Here is how that concept translates into the space:
✦ The Blue Glass Bird Chandelier (Reception):
Suspended right over the front desk is a massive, glowing installation composed of hundreds of individual blue glass birds. Modeled after the Turaco, it sets a vivid blue accent that runs throughout the main public areas.
✦ Bird-Nest Lighting (Lobby Lounge):
In the lobby, the motif shifts from the bird itself to its environment. The custom metal and glass light fixtures are woven in an organic, chaotic geometry designed to mimic a bird's nest.
✦ Feather Motifs (Ballroom):
The crystal chandeliers in the main ballroom are sculpted in sweeping, continuous curves that mirror the fluid lines of bird feathers in flight.
✦ Guinea Fowl Textures (Guestrooms):
In the private guest quarters, the focus moves to the spotted, rhythmic plumage of the Ethiopian guinea fowl. High-contrast, black-and-white architectural photography of these feather patterns serves as the primary wall art.
It is a solid example of how local ecology and seasonal culture can drive modern interior architecture without falling back on cliché cultural motifs.

Designed by PMA Madhushala in Maval, India, The Gadi House translates ancient defensive logic into modern kinetic poetry.
Raw masonry and quiet courtyards anchor the heavy, fortress-grade base, contrasting with a wave-toothed red-brick crown that drapes light and air like fabric.
Here, brickwork behaves less like load and more like textile.

| 7 | When I was a freshman, one of our design teachers often complained about how much our generation had changed and how difficult it was to teach us.
Of course, every generation is different. Technology, culture, attention spans, and the way people learn all change over time. But isn't it also the responsibility of a teacher to adapt?
If an old teaching method is no longer as effective as it used to be, shouldn't a teacher look for new ways to communicate, engage, and teach effectively rather than simply blaming the new generation?
A good teacher doesn't necessarily have to abandon traditional methods, but they should be willing to question whether those methods are still working.
There is a difference between saying “students today learn differently” and saying “students today are worse.”
The first is an observation that calls for adaptation. The second turns a teaching challenge into a complaint about an entire generation.
Every generation changes. Perhaps the real measure of a good teacher isn't whether they can teach students who think like they did, but whether they can find a way to teach students who don't. | 1 874 |

The graduating Architecture students will have their final project jury sessions from 10 July to 13 July, 2026 . I strongly encourage all of you to attend the jury sessions. Observing the presentations, discussions, critiques, drawings, models, and design processes will give you valuable exposure and help you understand what will be expected of you as you progress through the Architecture programme.
In addition, the Architecture Department and Unity University are planning a public Architecture Exhibition in September. The exhibition will showcase work produced by students from all Architecture batches. It will be held both at a public venue in Addis Ababa and at Unity University’s Gerji Campus. The Gerji Campus exhibition will also help incoming students understand architecture and decide whether studying Architecture is the right path for them.
Your participation and contribution will be important. Therefore, in addition to attending the jury sessions, all of you are requested to come to the Gerji Campus on Monday at 2:00 p.m. for an orientation and discussion about the upcoming exhibition.

| 13 | 🏛️ The Invisible Weight of Being an Architect
Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s time we talk about the elephant in the studio.
People see the final renders, the beautiful buildings, the creativity, the titles, the late nights in studios and offices. But very few people truly understand what architecture can do to a person mentally.
Architecture is not just a job you leave at the office. It follows you home. It stays in your head during family dinners, during conversations with friends, even when you are trying to rest. Your body may leave the studio, but your mind often doesn’t.
Many architects silently struggle with burnout, anxiety, loneliness, isolation, toxic work environments, unrealistic deadlines, and constant self-doubt. We are taught to normalize exhaustion. To romanticize sleepless nights and overworking. To believe that sacrificing our health and personal lives is simply “part of the profession.”
And slowly, life outside work begins to disappear.
You stop replying to messages.
You cancel plans.
You isolate yourself without realizing it.
You tell yourself you’ll rest after the next deadline.
Then another deadline comes.
At some point, you begin questioning yourself:
“Am I even good enough for this profession?”
But the truth is, struggling does not make you weak. It makes you human.
It is okay to pause.
It is okay to step away from the screen.
It is okay to choose sleep, family, friends, exercise, peace, and your mental health.
And it is okay to work on yourself before work.
A healthy architect creates better spaces, better ideas, and ultimately a better life.
We need to normalize conversations about mental health in architecture — not as a weakness, but as something necessary. Check on your friends in the profession. Support each other. Rest when you need to. Set boundaries when you must.
Because before being architects, we are human beings first.

Located in the heart of Pengzhou’s old town, this project breathes new life into a historic area centered around the 1,000-year-old Longxing Temple and its charming old streets filled with teahouses and restaurants.
Despite its rich cultural identity, the area had become dilapidated — with aging 1970s-80s buildings and closed factories. Since 2019, the city has been transforming it into a vibrant new urban center featuring commerce, culture, hotels, and residences.
The design smartly balances development costs and long-term operations while blending old heritage with modern functions through “Functional segmentation and dynamic integration.”
A beautiful example of respectful urban renewal! 🇨🇳✨
