These images are results from one of my DNA tests. The image on the left shows how much DNA i share with one of my matches. This match is a relative i didn't know existed until she appeared as a match. The amount of DNA shared gives you an idea how far back our common ancestor was. This can vary quite a bit due to the randomness built into the genetic lottery! This is why there's only % estimates. It not a limit of the testing technology just a consequence of the lottery. The amount shared is DNA we both got from a common ancestor. This is called identical by descent or IBD. The "unweighted shared DNA" is from the gene pool rather than IBD. You will have more of this if your from a small genepool like Ashkenazi Jews or Icelanders. This is why even "unrelated" people from small genepools are like each other.
