Last year, at EACT Classes, we announced a free batch for Class 11th commerce students. We announced this initiative through all our social media handles and also through leading daily newspaper in Kashmir. Our unique proposition was that all faculties would be Chartered Accountants, making us the first in Kashmir to offer separate subject faculties, each a Chartered Accountant. We anticipated a positive response but were surprised when only two students (that too both being girls) enrolled, both through references from our own faculties. This indicated that there was a lack of trust from the broader community. Nevertheless, we remained committed to our cause and continued with our classes. When these students advanced to 12th grade, one of them called me with a request, "Lateef sir, please start charging a fee for class 12th." I reassured her that we would not charge fees, no matter the circumstances. She explained, "Sir, I have been trying for a year to convince my classmates to join these free classes, as they have no parallel, but they always refuse. They believe that because it's free, the quality of teaching must be poor." I assured her that we would maintain the quality and complete the syllabus as promised. With renewed determination, we resumed the classes of 12th grade and once again posted about it on our social media handles. This time, we managed to enroll around seven students. Yesterday, when the results were announced, this girl achieved the 5th position and another girl secured the 10th position. As our journey of providing free and quality education continues, we are still pondering why students find it hard to trust those who are genuinely committed to their betterment.
