Combine 1300g of shredded grass, unshredded: 53g roots, 53g soil, and 53g grass with 1 gallon of distilled water in a large container. The unshredded components help maintain a balance of microbes that might be lost if everything were shredded.
Fermentation Process: Set heat and aerator and leave it to ferment for 48 hours at room temperature. During this time, the natural microbes found in the soil and on the roots begin to break down the grass material. This process is aerobic fermentation, which means it happens with oxygen.
The fermentation process is driven by bacteria and fungi present in materials. These microbes consume the organic matter in the grass, converting it into simpler compounds that plants can absorb more easily. Fermentation produces various beneficial by-products such as vitamins, hormones, and enzymes that can promote healthier plant growth. Additionally, this process also helps to release macro-nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as micronutrients, making them more available to plants.
Straining and Application: After 48 hours, strain the liquid to remove the solid matter. Dilute this liquid with water (to prevent nutrient burn due to high concentration) before applying it directly to the soil around your plants.
This homemade plant food is a sustainable way to recycle yard waste and also provides a rich, cost-effective source of nutrients for your garden. Compared to commercial synthetic fertilizers, this method reduces the need for chemical inputs, supports the soil microbiome, and fosters a healthier garden ecosystem.
