■ PROBLEMS OF COTTON TEXTILE INDUSTRIES
◇ Scarcity of raw material
Indian cotton textile suffered a lot as a result of partition because most of the long staple cotton growing areas went to Pakistan.
◇ Obsolete machinery
Most of the textile mills are old with obsolete machinery. This result in low productivity and Inferior quality.
◇ Low productivity of Labour
On an average a worker in India handles about 2 handlooms as compared to 30 handlooms in Japan and 60 handlooms in USA.
◇ Stiff Competition
Indian cotton mill industry has to face stiff competition from Powerloom and handloom industry, Synthetic fibres and from products of other countries.
◇ Strikes
◇ Erratic power supply

◇ Although TN produces only about 6% of the mill cloth of India, the state excels all other states in the production of yarn and accounts for over 44% of the total yarn production of the country.
◇ Coimbatore – most important centre – Manchester of south India.
□ West Bengal
◇ Kolkata is the most important centre of WB. It enjoys facilities of a port, humid climate.
◇ Coal from Raniganj, local labour due to high density of population and those of dyeing and washing.
◇ The other important centres are Haora, Murshidabad, Hugli, Sirampur, Shiampur and Panihar.
□ Uttar Pradesh
◇ Developed in western part of UP.
◇ Kanpur is largest cente and is known as Manchester of UP.
◇ The city has 10 out of 52 cotton textile mills of the state.
◇ Other important centres are Moradabad, Varanasi, Agra, Bareilly, Aligarh, Modinagar etc.

□ Gujarat
◇ Gujarat is the second largest producer of cotton textiles.
◇ Ahmedabad is the largest center where 73 out of 118 mills of Gujarat are located.
◇ Following facilities are available to Ahmedabad :-
• Ahmedabad lies near the main cotton belt of India and there is no problem of obtaining raw material.
• Climate is humid and is suited to this Industry.
• Cheap and skilled labor is drawn from nearby areas.
• Ahmedabad is served by a network of railways and roadways.
• Land at Ahmedabad is much cheaper as compared to that in Mumbai.
• Most of the Ahmedabad mills produce cheap cloth which finds a ready market among the poor masses of India.
4. The other important centers of Gujarat are Vadodra, Bharuch, Surat, Rajkot, Porbandar etc.
□ Madhya pradesh
◇ Cotton is locally grown.
◇ Coal provides necessary energy.
◇ Gwalior, Ujjain, Indore, Dewas, Ratlam, Jabalpur etc.
