🇫🇷 Arrête de faire l'andouille 🇬🇧 Stop acting stupidly ____ DEFINITION • Arrête → Stop • De faire → To do • L'andouille → The sausage It's a common and soft way to say to someone that he/she is acting stupid. The exact origin of this expression is unknown. HOW TO USE If someone around you is "acting like a sausage" a.k.a. acting stupid, you can say "Arrête de faire l'andouille". This is familiar and, depending on the situation, it might get perceived as "kidding" but also criticism.  If you say it to tease a close friend about something, he/she will probably laugh about it. But if you say it to someone you barely know and with an aggressive tone, people won't react the same way, so be careful when you use this one. SYNONYMS • Arrête ton char. ("Stop your chariot") • Arrête ton charre. ("Stop kidding") • Arrête ton baratin. ("Stop your jibber jabber") • Arrête tes conneries. ("Stop your bullshit")(Vulgar) • Arrête ton cirque. 🎧 STORY OF THE DAY 🎧 Now, an example in the story of the day! ⬇️ Text below ⬇️

🇫🇷 Loin des yeux, loin du cœur 🇬🇧 Out of sight, out of mind ____ DEFINITION The literal meaning is: • Loin → Far • des yeux→ of/from the eyes • loin → far • du coeur → of/from the heart This proverb has Latin roots (from a poem by Properce, 1st century BC) and is very similar to the English one "Out of sight, out of mind". It says that the distance between two people weakens the affection they have for each other. HOW TO USE Use it as general wisdom. For example, if a friend is telling you about the troubles of his/her long distance relationship, you can say: "Loin des yeux, loin du coeur." (Far from the eyes, far from the heart) FUN FACT There aren't any popular synonyms, but weirdly, there is an antonym: "Loin des yeux, près du coeur" (Far from the eyes, close to the heart) It means that even if you are far from someone you love, the feelings are still strong. Which one do you think is true? ____ 🔊 Real-life example with audio in the story of the day ⬇️ @LearnFrenchDaily
