The table compares six various industries (namely manufacturing, retail, health care, construction, education and tourism) in terms of the percentage of people working in these industries in the years 1989 and 2009.
Overall, it is clear that four of the six industries (health care, construction, education and tourism) experienced a noticeable rise in worker figures, whereas a downward trend can be seen in the proportion of people employed in manufacturing and retail industries over the period given. We can also see that manufacturing was replaced by healthcare as the most common industry for workers.
Looking more closely, we can see that 15% of all people employed were in the manufacturing sector in 1989, making it by far the most common choice for workers. Retail was the second most common sector, employing close to 12% of the workforce. Almost one in ten people was working in healthcare, while 7.6% were doing construction work. The figures for education and tourism were significantly lower, standing at 6.8% and 5.5% respectively.
Over the next 20 years, the proportion of people working in the six industries saw some big changes. Healthcare workers, for instance, grew noticeably in percentage, reaching 11.3%, almost 2% up from the 1989 rate. Similar rising trends can be observed in construction (from 7.6% to 8.3%), education (from 6.8% to 7.5%) and tourism (from 5.5% to 7.3%) sectors. By contrast, manufacturing workforce fell by 5.2% compared to its 1989 level, and those involved in retail work fell by 1.7%, relative to its size 20 years ago.
