Eyrie observation tower has been proposed by the London-based architects Denizen Works to draw more visitors to Inverewe Garden, one of the UK’s best botanical gardens. Getting its name from a large nest of a bird of prey, the 20-metres tall tower will offer an experience integrated into the natural route through the garden landscape. Following a path down the natural contours of the slope, visitors will cross a short bridge to the tower, where they will be guided through gallery spaces at each level to the bird hide offering stunning views at the top. The choice of materials references the idea of a sliced tree trunk, with its rough and smooth faces: dark, stained vertical larch cladding, sourced on site, contrasts with smooth pine tar.

New York firm Rockwell Group known for their theatre sets for Broadway plays has designed Sage, an adaptable collection of sustainable office furniture for the British furniture maker Benchmark. The range consists of various workplace furnishings, constructed with natural non-toxic materials that comply with environmental sustainability standards.
Showcasing the adaptability usually found in set design, the collection’s pieces can be transformed to suit multiple functions and allow different levels of privacy. The height of the Sit-Stand Desk and Workbench can be adjusted at the touch of a button allowing users to work on their feet, while a rounded panel made with wool felt and cork extends up from the centre of the desks to act as a functional space divider and a pin board. Other pieces in the collection include sofas, side tables, upholstered benches, dining tables that can also double as adjustable height meeting surfaces and a sideboard that serves as both a divider and storage unit.

Our inspiration today is the portrait of Mac with Shadows by Britain’s most straight-forward painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling. The first ever artist-in-residence at the National Gallery, London, Hambling is perhaps best known for her vigorous portraits and colourful and energetic style.

Ljubljana-based studio Enota completed Termalija Family Wellness pool which completes the transformation Terme Olimia Spa in Slovenia. The project of an upgrade of a former 1980s water park was aimed to connect the complex better with the surrounding landscape. While the rest of the buildings were cut-and-filled underground, the renovation of the outdoor pool required a large intervention above ground. The roof above the water was divided into sets of smaller segments to prevent its scale from overwhelming the surroundings. Viewed from a distance, the clustered structure of tetrahedral volumes looks like a group of rural buildings, visually extending into the heart of the spa. The seemingly complex geometry gives the new roof static strength, allowing the entire pool space to be covered virtually without supports for a feeling of openness and lightness.

Japanese timber company Sumitomo Forestry is going to mark its 350th anniversary in 2041 by constructing a 70-storey and 350-metre-tall timber skyscraper. Designed in collaboration with Tokyo practice Nikken Sekkei and aptly named W350, the structure is set to be the world's tallest wooden building as well as Japan’s highest. Timber is expected to make up 90% of the hybrid structure.
The ambitious mixed-use tower would include a hotel, residential units, offices, and shops wrapped in large balconies with plants sprouting from them to offer a view of biodiversity in an urban setting.

Toronto Tree Tower by Penda, an architecture studio with offices in China and Austria, is an incredible proposal for a high-rise residential block with a modular structure made from cross-laminated timber (CLT). Inspired by Montreal’s renowned Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67 building, the project will include 4,500sqm of residential area, along with 550sqm of public space. The CLT units for the structure are to be assembled off-site, then delivered and stacked onto the foundations, after which wooden facade panels would be installed and sealed. The team is known for incorporating plants into its architecture, and Toronto Tree Tower is no exception featuring plants and trees sprouting from its modular units.

Shanghai-born photographer Fan Ho (1931-2016), dubbed Cartier-Bresson of the East, got famous with his photography dedicated to Hong Kong. His work is characterized by his love for the common people of the city whom he shot against geometrical backgrounds, cleverly composed patterns and textures in the streets and alleys. He often created drama and atmosphere with the help of light and shadow and his amazing shot Approaching Shadow (1954) is a great example.

The Repeated Mirrors by the Eindhoven-based studio OS&OOS double as an art piece. The collection comprises a series of layered reflective glasses of yellow, blue, black, purple and pink that blend through one another, new shades coming through. The circular translucent bronzed foil mirror at the surface is resting on top of the balanced formation of these stacked glass panels which are organic in shape.

For Forest – The Unending Attraction of Nature was a temporary art intervention by Basel-based artist Klaus Littmann who turned the Wörthersee Stadium in Austria into a mixed forest. Littmann originally got the idea over 30 years ago when he first saw the pencil drawing “The Unending Attraction of Nature”, by Max Peintner. To turn this striking dystopia into a reality, landscape architect Enzo Enea planted 300 trees, which covered the stadium’s entire playing field.
With this monumental work of art, Littmann aimed to deliver a warning: One day, we might have to admire the remnants of nature in specially assigned spaces, as is already the case with some zoo animals.
