#BeOpenARCH Commissioned to design a preschool in Gujarat state, India, local practice Shreesh Design Studio has arranged brightly coloured classroom buildings in a circle around a central amphitheatre. This, the designers hope, will provide "a space as colourful as the minds of its users." The use of steel for the classroom structures makes the design cost-effective for the client, as well as ensure that the buildings can be easily dismantled and relocated if necessary. Sandpits, grassy landscaping, water fountains and a swimming pool were also added as tactile spaces for the students to play in. The pathway around the amphitheatre can also be used as a cycle track.

#BeOpenARCH MAD architects have wrapped an abandoned Taiping market building in Guangdong, China, in ethereal veil of multicolored cloth. The fair kept flourishing until the 1980s, when it gradually fell into disrepair because of the modern-day urbanization. Named Timeless Beacon, the ethereal and colorful art installation sees the former three-story commercial hub wrapped in reflective film. This new material blurrily mirrors the surrounding old streets through the building’s façade and inner space, respectively. At the top, there is a towering multimedia light device, which once bustling commercial hub as the night falls.

#BeOpenDESIGN The innovative prosthetic arm by New York based industrial designer Chan Lee has been developed for amputees who enjoy an active and adventurous lifestyle and require a high-performance prosthesis for sports activities, such as mountain biking and cycling. Zenos is an affordable open sourced 3D printable prosthetic arm that users can download anywhere for free. The design incorporates two unique features - an easy-lock and quick-release system that allows users to connect and disconnect the device from bike handlebars and an easily-adjustable shock-absorbing elbow designed to reduce impact on the shoulder. For the last five years, Michele De Lucchi and his multidisciplinary studio AMDL Circle have focused on the Earth Stations project, visionary buildings designed to promote the well-being of people and the health of the planet. Earth Stations are active architectures that form networks, which are easy to reach and are built in places that form or regenerate urban and infrastructural nodes. Crown Station epitomizes a metaphoric bridge between one’s own ideas and those of the others. The regal form symbolizes the triumph of the intellect. The building suspended between two cliffs houses a traditional and digital library connecting diverse ideas and innovations through the use of technology. #BeOpenARCH

#BeOpenDESIGN Time Slider clock by Sweden-based designer Hans Andersson combines the elegance of an analog clock with the readability of a digital one. Although it looks like the latter, it doesn’t actually contain a digital display. Instead, it shows four sliders, which look like pixels and are actually 3D-printed frames. When time changes, one or more of the eight vertical sliders move up or down to change the digits to tell the specific hour or minute. It is made using an Arduino Mega 2560 board, a real-time clock (RTC) module, ULN2003 motor drivers, wires, and a power supply. More extraordinary clocks in our blog

#BeOpenARCH The idea behind this spiraling home built by architecture studio Wallmakers in the village of Shoolagiri, India, was to create a subterranean home that would originate from the rock bed on an overlooked site considered unsuitable for living. As its name suggests, Chuzhi house (Malayalam for “whirlpool”) forms multiple whirls around the existing tree and rocks on the site. The team compares the building that blends in with the surrounding landscape with a snake curling up under a rock on a hot day.

#BeOpenART Sydney-based studio Atelier Sisu creates immersive public art installations playfully named “bubble-tecture” all around the world. Displayed in over 22 different cities in 12 different countries across 4 continents, Evanescent is their project that comprises giant colourful bubbles crafted using inflatable structures and color-reflecting dichroic film. Simultaneously massive and ephemeral, the installation perfectly mimics the appearance of real-life soap bubbles, causing a rainbow of reflection across the ground and a unique picture from every angle.
