The Society of Nigerian Artists is Nigeria's leading body for visual artists, fostering community, professional growth, and promotion of Nigerian art. Association Arts Burkina unites artists from Burkina Faso, promoting Burkinabé art locally and internationally while collecting and representing original works. The National Gallery of Art in Abuja oversees public and private galleries, preserving Nigeria’s creative heritage and advancing modern Nigerian art nationally and globally.

#BeOpenDESIGN Carlo Ratti Associati, in collaboration with Salone del Mobile.Milano, unveils a visionary self-sufficient wooden alpine bivouac shelter designed to operate independently in remote mountain environments. Set to debut as an urban pavilion during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan before being relocated to the Alps, the shelter exemplifies the fusion of digital technology and sustainable design. Its form, inspired by 3D scans of actual rock formations, harmonizes with the natural terrain while housing advanced systems for autonomous energy and water generation. Constructed from prefabricated cross-laminated timber with aerogel insulation and a reinforced metal shell, the bivouac integrates photovoltaic panels and an air-condensation system to produce electricity and potable water for climbers. Subtle yet intelligent design choices, such as a red warning light that activates in low-visibility conditions, ensure both safety and environmental integration.

#BeOpenDESIGN To celebrate the start of its “jacket potato season,” UK supermarket chain Aldi has partnered with London fashion brand Agro Studio to release the “Jacket Potato Jacket”—a limited-edition puffer coat designed to look like a giant baked potato. The playful design features a mottled brown exterior, a fluffy white fleece lining, silver cuffs, and extendable brown mittens to mimic a foil-wrapped spud, along with a matching silver rain poncho for “baked-in warmth.”

#BeOpenDESIGN The Seaside Mobile Library by Studio WE reimagines the library as a traveling cultural hub, bringing books, performances, and educational programs directly to coastal fishing villages in rural China. Comprised of three modular timber units that can be reconfigured as a library, stage, or pavilion, the prefabricated structure balances mobility, durability, and ease of assembly. Large openings frame sea views and allow natural ventilation, while outdoor terraces extend the space for gatherings and reading. By blending local craftsmanship, contextual sensitivity, and social purpose, the project transforms a library into a flexible, portable platform for community engagement and cultural exchange, making learning both accessible and adventurous. #BeOpenNEWS From December 8–12, BE OPEN took part in the 7th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya, the world’s highest decision-making body on environmental matters. The foundation used this global platform to celebrate the winners of its Designing Futures 2050 competition, an initiative aligned with UNEA-7’s theme, Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet. The winners attending UNEA-7 represented diverse and innovative approaches to sustainability: Ajisafe Damilola Ifeoluwa with Redefining Global Healthcare; Foday David Kamara transforming plastic waste into construction materials; Adnan Hasyim Wibowo, Fathan Mubani and Rani Marhyani with AGASA, an algae-based sustainability initiative; Komborero Victor Kangai and Tinotenda Chrispen Makoni with CALMs, a computer-aided learning management suite; and Lucy Dain-Williams representing Tera Mira, focused on sustainable stretch textiles.

#BeOpenDESIGN Mirach by furniture brand Plasma-f is a striking meditation on material afterlives, transforming slivers of reclaimed marble into a unified whole through pure tension. Conceived by Milan-based architect and designer Alberto Smaldone and crafted in collaboration with local stone specialists Frigerio Marmi e Graniti, the table assembles offcuts of red, brown, green, beige and white marble within a stainless-steel frame whose precisely tightened brackets draw the fragments together, no adhesive required. Presented at the Lake Como Design Festival’s Contemporary Design Selections, curated by Giovanna Massoni, Mirach embodies this year’s “fragments” theme with clarity and poetry, demonstrating how discarded materials can be reimagined as expressive, structurally intelligent design.

#BeOpenDESIGN Austria’s “Power Giants” concept proposes reshaping high-voltage transmission towers into large animal-inspired sculptures representing each of the nine federal states, such as a stork for Burgenland and a stag for Lower Austria. Developed by Austrian Power Grid with GP design partners, the stork and stag models have already undergone early structural and electrical pretests to assess whether such sculptural towers are feasible. The project aims to improve public acceptance of grid expansion by integrating regional wildlife symbols into the landscape.

#BeOpenDESIGN Toyota’s “walk me” concept, unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, is an autonomous wheelchair that swaps traditional wheels for four robotic, foldable legs capable of climbing stairs, navigating uneven ground, and even lifting users into cars. Designed for daily use by people with limited mobility, the device features independently moving limbs, a supportive upright seat, intuitive handle or button controls, and soft protective leg coverings housing sensors. Its legs retract for compact storage and redeploy autonomously for stable movement.

#BeOpenARCH The revitalization of the P. O. Hviezdoslav Regional Library in Prešov transforms three adjoining historic townhouses into a coherent, contemporary public space that honors the past while embracing new possibilities. Swedish Doxa and Bistan Architekti preserve the generous hall-like interiors of the central townhouse and introduce a gradient shelving system that keeps daylight flowing deep into the building. Double-height steel shelves suspended from slender rods form a curtain-like architectural framework, giving the heavy structure an unexpected sense of lightness. As visitors move upward, the shelving becomes denser, shifting the atmosphere from open and communal on the ground floor to more focused and intimate on the upper levels. Throughout the project, original masonry walls, later cast-iron additions, and new steel interventions remain visible, creating a readable story of the building’s evolution. Revealed at IFA Berlin 2025, the teddy bear–like device blends soft materials with dual AI systems that handle language, vision, and emotional interaction. It can recognize faces, remember routines, and display feelings such as happiness, loneliness, or even jealousy through animated LED expressions, sounds, and body movements. With cameras for eyes, microphones for ears, and a synthetic voice, it chats, jokes, sings, and assists with daily tasks. With its conceptual roots in Imbrione’s earlier “display jackets” like vinyl-holding or guitar-holding jackets), this version turns the jacket into a bold celebration of street-style, youth energy, and subcultural identity. It’s where the rawness of denim meets conceptual fashion: the jacket captures the rebellious, DIY spirit of skateboarding.

#BeOpenDESIGN Lenovo has unveiled a prototype “Yoga Solar PC,” an ultraslim laptop powered partly by an edge-to-edge solar panel integrated into its lid and shown at MWC in Barcelona. Using high-efficiency 24% back-contact solar cells, the 15-millimetre-thick, 1.22-kilogram device can harvest enough direct sunlight in 20 minutes to deliver up to an hour of video playback, automatically prioritizing solar power through a solar-first energy system with dynamic tracking. While it can also draw limited energy from indoor ambient light, the concept’s main promise lies in extending battery life outdoors.

#BeOpenDESIGN Umbra Pavilion, designed by fashion designer Pauline van Dongen for Dutch Design Week, showcases Heliotex, a flexible solar-energy-generating textile made from recycled polyester woven with 150 organic photovoltaic cells. Developed with Tentech, the lightweight material offers an adaptable alternative to rigid silicon panels, enabling architectural uses such as cladding, festival tents, or textile “second skins” for buildings. Spanning 40 square metres with eight square metres of active solar area, Heliotex is engineered for durability, weather resistance, and recyclability, with replaceable cells held by monofilament yarn rather than glue. Although its current energy output is lower than traditional panels, ongoing research is rapidly improving performance, underscoring its potential to bring solar power to places conventional panels can’t reach.

#BeOpenNEWS #BeOpenART BE OPEN Art is delighted to name Noushin Delfani as the Artist of the Month for November 2025, selected through a public vote from a shortlist of remarkable emerging artists showcased on our online gallery. Noushin Delfani is an Iranian visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, graphic textile design, and sculpture. Drawing from her lived experience as a Middle Eastern woman, Delfani navigates the spaces between figuration and abstraction. At the end of the year, one monthly winner will be selected as Artist of the Year 2025, receiving a €1,000 prize and a dedicated promotional campaign to further support their artistic journey. We congratulate Noushin Delfani and thank her for her powerful contribution to the BE OPEN Art community.
