CHURCH GIST WORLD'S LARGEST CHURCH AUDITORIUM SERIES 7. THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH NATIONAL TEMPLE, LAWNA TERRITORY, NIGERIA-30, 000 seat capacity. The years 1904-5 witnessed a mighty divine visitation throughout Wales in the United Kingdom. During the Revival, multitudes were born again and wonderful manifestations of the Holy Spirit were witnessed. This led to The establishment of The Apostolic Faith Church Bournemouth (Not affiliated to the one headquartered in Portland, Oregon). In a short while, there was a disagreement within the Church leading to the establishment of The Apostolic Church at Pennygroes, Wales. In Nigeria, the reading of Apostolic Church literature by Christians in Lagos and the desire for foreign partnership to prevent or reduce harrassment from the Colonial authorities led to an exchange of correspondence with the Missionary Centre in Bradford. So in 1931, shortly after the Oke- Ooye Revival, some 3 prominent leaders of The Apostolic Church in United Kingdom visited Nigeria. They were Pastors D. P. Williams, Andrew Turnbull and Prophet W. Jones Williams who arrived Lagos on 23rd September, 1931 after some initial hesitation on the Nigerian side and together with Nigerians, conducted large campaigns in Western Nigeria. By Sunday, 15th November 1931, all conditions of agreement had been met and at the subsequent Council Meeting the Nigerian Leaders who were then of the Faith Tabernacle Church, decided to join The Apostolic Church headquartered in Pennygroes, Great Britain and same day, 7 Nigerians were ordained pastors at TAC Ebute Meta, Lagos In 1932, Pastor G. Perfect and I. J. Vaughan were sent as the first missionaries and were followed by many others who served so faithfully that Nigeria became the most productive of all The Apostolic Mission Fields. NATIONAL TEMPLE The prophetic office is a major aspect of TAC operations. Bearing this in mind, the prophecy by Prophet Isaiah Ghele Sakpo during the TAC Nigeria (TACN) annual convention at Ebute Meta, Lagos on 4th August 1957 of a national temple that will take hundreds of thousands of people given the hindrances of the colonial setting at the time was received with appreciation and thanksgiving to God. Consequent upon this, the land on which the National Temple is now situated was purchased by the first LAWNA Territorial Chairman, Pastor S. G. Adegboyega of blessed memory. In 1969, the Annual Lagos Western and Northern Area (LAWNA) Convention was held at Orishigun because Ebute Metta could no longer contain worshippers coming for the Convention. In 1970, the Convention was moved to the present LAWNA Grounds. In 1976, LAWNA started to hold the Annual Conventions in what is now known as the Old Convention Hall. In 1979, Pastor S. G. Adegboyega laid the foundation of what was to be the National Temple. However, nothing significant happened after the foundation laying and it became more or less an isolated property without any fence until 26th August 1981 when some thugs from the Ketu Community in Lagos invaded and attempted to take over parts of the convention grounds in order to construct a school for their community right in the presence of the then LAWNA Chairman, Pastor I.G Sakpo. The Church had freely allocated some of the said land to the Community but they refused and wanted to choose by force what they preferred. It appeared that they had Lagos State government backing. The thugs who came drinking and smoking, mockingly threatened to build a university there to spite the Church. The ensuing invasion and consequent disagreement resulted in fisticuffs with the thugs bringing out daggers and eventually stabbing one of the Church staff leading to a court case over attempted murder. The matter was eventually settled out of court and it appeared that the Church without a voice at the time got the short end of the stick. The ring leader of the team later became a member of TAC after the deed had been done. Those were the days of 'as poor as a Church rat'.

This served as an eye opener to the TACN. Preparations began in earnest and on 10th May 1986, another foundation laying by Pastor Sakpo on a different spot took place. Under Pastor Sakpo, the work on the national temple began and made great progress while the Convention was held for the first time in the uncompleted temple before he passed on to glory in August 1993. Pastor S.S Jemigbon succeeded Sakpo and he made great progress with the project. He set up an accounting team for the National Temple to ensure funds were properly accounted for. He also began to put the uncompleted building to regular use and I was privileged to worship there and listen to Pastor Jemigbon during the Convention in August 2000. Jemigbon quickened the pace of the superstructure into a landmark. After Jemigbon's departure, Pastor G. O Olutola succeeded him in 2009 and it was under him within 2 years that the National Temple was painted and equipped with a fundraising held which brought in over N100 million ( about $700, 000 at the time) in order to complete the project and hold the dedication service of the Temple on 19th November 2011 in line with the words of Pastor Olutola in 2009 that the temple would be dedicated before on or before November 2011. On assumption of office, Pastor Awojide provided pews which was the basis of our counting and present stated figures. The Temple size was also expanded a number of times during construction. However the initial design appears to have changed from an initial stadium design to a semi-circle structure as if the diameter was cut into two equal parts. . According to the initial plan, the Temple was to have a seating capacity of more than 100,000 worshippers in a single service. In fact, while some church officials claim it sits 100,000, the Church's manuals claim it sits 150,000 and ranks as the largest church auditorium in the world. However during Church Gist's several visits and physical counting of the chairs as well as pews present today, the auditorium itself consisting of the main bowl and gallery sits a little above 30,000 at maximum capacity while the overflow facility, referring to the outside grounds make up for the rest. During a recent visit in June 2024, a total of about 1,800 pews that can take between 8 and 10 people were counted on the ground floor. Assuming each pew sits 10 people, the ground floor will take 18,000. The gallery is highest case about two fifth of the ground floor which can thus be about 7,000. Another 2000 to 3000 on the Altar and choir areas with additional 2000 for errors in our counting makes It 30,000. The grounds outside can probably double or triple based on how it is utilized. It is noteworthy that a Bible College, conference hall and offices were part of the features in the original design which were later removed due to cost as well as prolonged construction period. LAWNA Territory, Nigeria organizes her Annual International Convention with different themes usually given through prophetical ministry at the National Temple. Today the TACN National Temple stands as the 7th largest church auditorium by seating capacity in the World.
