As I have repeatedly said, whenever the MOVE Index falls, FII selling tends to ease. Yesterday, the MOVE Index fell to 92, and today we saw FIIs turn buyers. However, I believe their buying may have been concentrated in IT stocks following the strong selling pressure on US AI stocks.
At the same time, DIIs sold smallcap and midcap stocks today, which is why these segments faced significant selling pressure.
It is surprising to see DII selling despite their regular buying in recent days. One possibility is that DII are still managing their funds and allocations around the Jio Platforms .
If smallcap stocks continue to fall, retail investors may panic and start selling. This could trigger a dangerous chain reaction through the Margin Trading Facility (MTF).
We have recently experienced the impact of MTF-related selling on our own portfolio. When brokers start liquidating leveraged positions, stocks can fall sharply in a domino effect, just like a pack of cards.
π What Happens Next?
The smallcap index needs to stabilise and move higher from current levels. Otherwise, further panic selling and MTF liquidations could put additional pressure on smallcap and midcap stocks.
π₯Why Did the Indian Market Fall Today?π₯
The Indian market is now becoming highly sensitive to developments in the US economy. Any negative news from the US can immediately impact Indian markets.
Yesterday, Alphabet (Google) crashed nearly 13% on October 29, its biggest single-day fall in over 20 years.
Key reasons behind the fall:
1. Search business slowdown: Google Search revenue growth slowed to 12% from 17% in the previous quarter. AI Mode is also generating lower advertising revenue.
2. Weak earnings: Adjusted EPS came at $2.67 against analysts' expectations of $3.02.
3. Huge AI spending: Q3 capital expenditure reached $51.36 billion, raising concerns about returns on AI investments.
4. Negative cash flow: Free cash flow turned negative at approximately $9.1 billion.
5. Higher future spending: Google indicated that AI-related investments will increase substantially in 2027.
Impact on Indian markets:
Today, Indian AI-related stocks also came under pressure following the fall in US AI stocks, while IT stocks performed better.
Another concern is US inflation, which reportedly increased to 3.7%. Higher inflation could force the Fed to keep interest rates higher or even increase them. This would increase borrowing costs for AI companies and put further pressure on their valuations.
My observation: The market is becoming extremely sensitive to AI companies' spending, borrowing costs and cash flows. Even companies with strong future growth prospects can fall sharply if investors are not convinced about their returns on AI investments.
Any negative news from US markets can now have a direct impact on Indian AI and technology stocks. π

Yesterday, US AI stocks fell again following negative news about borrowing costs and cash flows of major AI companies. As a result, Indian AI-related stocks also declined today, while IT stocks moved higher.
This pattern has become common nowadays. Every 10β15 days, some negative news related to AI companies emerges, triggering a correction in AI stocks. Once the negative news subsides, these stocks often recover again.
