Three years ago, the #GiletsJaunes protests erupted into the spotlight—a populist movement that initially offered fertile ground for the far right, though anti-fascists ultimately won the day. The initial #GiletsJaunes movement showed how centrist administrations can benefit the far right. When centrists use their authority to stabilize capitalism at the expense of the poor, nationalists can present themselves as rebels who are trying to protect “ordinary people” from the oppressive machinations of the government. Fortunately, anarchists hurried to contest nationalist participation in the #giletsjaunes. Every struggle is, in part, a struggle to shape the popular imagination regarding what kind of change we need.
