[] WHAT IS UP WITH INDONESIA? Today, on the 12th of June, 2026, thousands of students took to the streets in Jakarta under the slogan “Heading Toward a Bankrupt Indonesia” to protest a series of government policies under the president. The protesters are not claiming that Indonesia is literally bankrupt today. Rather, they argue that current economic and political policies could push the country toward a serious crisis if left unaddressed.

THE 5 MAIN CONCERNS 1. Eliminate wasteful state spending. Students argue that government funds are being allocated to costly programs while many urgent economic problems remain unresolved. 2. Lower fuel and basic commodity prices. Fuel prices recently increased significantly, leading to higher transportation costs and rising prices of everyday necessities. 3. End the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program and Koperasi Merah Putih. Protesters argue that these programs place a heavy burden on the state budget and question their effectiveness and implementation. 4. Stop militarism in civilian affairs. Many students are concerned about the growing role of the military in non-military institutions and fear a rollback of democratic reforms achieved after the fall of the New Order regime. 5. Demand that President Prabowo acknowledge policy mistakes. Protesters want the government to be more accountable and responsive to criticism rather than dismissing public concerns.

Beyond these demands, demonstrators also point to broader issues:

• The Indonesian rupiah has weakened significantly against the US dollar, raising concerns about economic stability. • Rising living costs are putting increasing pressure on ordinary Indonesians. • Large-scale government spending programs have sparked concerns about fiscal sustainability and the long-term health of public finances. • Investors and economists have expressed concerns about Indonesia’s fiscal credibility and budget management. • Many protesters believe the country is facing not only economic challenges, but also democratic ones, citing concerns about civil liberties, government accountability, and the increasing involvement of the military in civilian affairs.

Many of the concerns raised by protesters did not appear overnight. They are the result of growing public frustration over economic pressures, controversial policies, and fears about the direction of the country. Stay aware, keep asking questions, and pay attention to what’s happening around you. The future of a nation is shaped not only by those in power, but also by those who choose not to look away.
