Nation and country are not the same. The word "nation" comes from the Latin natio, meaning "race" or "breed," and from nasci, meaning "to be born" (Howell, 1991). Countries (geo-political zones) are often not representative of the nations forming parts within their borders. There are nations which are without a country of their own, such as the Cossacks, the Boers, and the Assyrians whose countries were abolished by others. Throughout history, there have been instances of countries forming governments that act against the interests of some of the nations within their borders, many times imposing a false identity or trying to erase the identity of other nations. Internationalism has set its agenda to destroy national identity. Konrad Adenauer, the German post-war prime minister, wrote, "The age of national states has come to an end... We in Europe must break ourselves of the habit of thinking in terms of national states."
