Did you know that Canada has 17 federally recognized heritage and commemorative months? Each is a celebration of the histories and contributions of many communities.
Yet there is not one month dedicated to Canada's own national heritage or to the generations of settlers whose determination, sacrifice, and hard work helped build this country.
Instead of recognizing those who cleared the land, built the railways, established farms, founded towns, and laid the foundations of modern Canada, many Canadians feel their history is too often overlooked or portrayed only through a negative lens.
Canadians deserve better.
The people we elect to represent us should also respect the generations whose labour and perseverance helped shape the country we call home. Recognizing Canada's settlement history does not diminish anyone else's heritage. It affirms that Canada's story is worthy of recognition alongside all others.
Today, we are proposing the Canadian Heritage Month Act, a bill that would designate July as Canadian Heritage Month and provide Canadians with an opportunity to honour, remember, and celebrate the people whose collective efforts built this nation.

If you are facing notices, knocks on the door and / or phone calls, below is some information:
1. The Statistics Act has NO enforcement authority
2. You can ONLY be charged if you flat out refuse to do the census, as in tell them you refuse
3. The census agent CANNOT charge you, they are just a regular old person working part time, they are NOT empowered to ticket
4. If you refuse, the ONLY thing the agent can do is pass the info to the AG/Crown agent to process
5. HOWEVER, without identificaiton of who you are, they cannot proceed... they would need YOU to confirm who you are and they MUST be able to ID you

Tomorrow, the TTC Board will consider a presentation called "Indigenous Wayfinding on the TTC" as Agenda Item TTC15.4.
According to the proposal, riders would be guided through stations using animal icons based on the "Seven Grandfather Teachings", including icons of a wolf , bear, bison, beaver, turtle, eagle, and raven to guide indigenous riders. The presenter argues this will help "decolonize how people orient themselves" and improve navigation through the transit system.

The underlying premise appears to be that Indigenous people require animal symbols to help them navigate a modern subway station. Not only is that unsupported by evidence, it is insulting. Indigenous people are fully capable of navigating Toronto's transit system the same way everyone else does. Suggesting otherwise reduces Indigenous culture to a stereotype and risks treating Indigenous knowledge as a novelty rather than respecting Indigenous people as equals. I will say that last part again - EQUALS.
If the TTC wants to improve wayfinding, then improve wayfinding for everyone 👍. Better signage, clearer exits, and more intuitive station design benefit all riders regardless of ancestry.
The TTC Board meeting takes place tomorrow, June 3, 2026 in person at City Hall, Committee Room 1.
