Eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia 10-minute Himawari-9 Ash RGB images Himawari-9 Ash RGB images created using Geo2Grid (above) showed a major eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia, which began around 1620 UTC on 04 September 2026. A lower-altitude ash cloud (depicted by shades of pink) remained closer to the volcano — while a higher-altitude SO2 cloud (shades of yellow-green) moved rapidly westward. After sunrise on 05 September, Himawari-9 True Color RGB images (below) showed the lower-altitude ash cloud as shades of brown, with pulses of higher-altitude volcanic cloud (a mixture of water vapor, ash and SO2) moving quickly westward away from the volcano. 10-minute Himawari-9 True Color RGB images via Himawari-9 – CIMSS Satellite Blog (author: Scott Bachmeier)

Super Typhoon Bavi rapidly intensifies to a Category 5 storm east of Guam Himawari-9 Infrared Window images with an overlay of contours and streamlines of deep-layer wind shear at 1800 UTC on 03 July Super Typhoon Bavi rapidly intensified to a Category 5 tropical cyclone east of Guam on 03 July 2026 (ADT | SATCON). Bavi was moving through an environment characterized by low values of deep-layer wind shear (above), as it was traversing progressively warmer water (Sea Surface Temperature | Ocean Heat Content). Himawari-9 Visible and Infrared images (below) provided a post-sunrise view of Bavi. 10-minute Himawari-9 Visible (left) and Infrared Window (right) images, from 1940 UTC on 03 July to 0030 UTC on 04 July via Himawari-9 – CIMSS Satellite Blog (author: Scott Bachmeier)
