Fauci's own diary, 8 February 2020: case fatality rate 0.2 to 0.3 percent. Under oath to Congress, 11 March 2020: about 1 percent. "Ten times more lethal than the flu." Thirty-two days apart. Here is what happened in between.🧵 --- The 8 February entry records a morning call with Tom Frieden, former director of the CDC. Fauci writes down 34,867 known cases against 724 deaths, then notes the true denominator is far larger than the confirmed count. His conclusion: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. He was right. --- Twenty days later he published the same reasoning under his own name. Fauci, Lane and Redfield in the New England Journal of Medicine: the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1 percent, closer to a severe seasonal influenza. Online 28 February 2020. --- On 11 March he was sworn before House Oversight. Rep. Michael Cloud asked how the virus compared. Fauci answered: flu is 0.1 percent, this is about three percent, roughly one percent once you count mild infection. Ten times more lethal than flu. Serial 116-96, page 29. --- The defense is that the science was evolving. It fails on the arithmetic. Both figures are denominator-adjusted. On 8 February he corrected a raw 2.0 percent down eightfold. Under oath on 11 March, he corrected a raw 3 percent down threefold. Same operation. Half the correction. --- Five days after that testimony, Imperial College published Report 9. Assumed infection fatality ratio: 0.9 percent. Projection: 2.2 million American deaths. A copy reached the Trump administration that weekend. Deaths scale with that ratio almost linearly. --- Substitute the figure from his own notebook and that projection falls by roughly two thirds. Ferguson did not take the assumption from Fauci. But Fauci held the lower number in writing, and was among the few who could have told the White House the input ran high. He did not. --- He has twice conceded that his public statements were shaped by something other than the evidence. Herd immunity, NYT, December 2020: he raised the figure as polling improved. Masks: Harvard's Kennedy School now teaches it as a case study in the noble lie. --- On 22 March 2020, British advisers told SAGE that many people did not feel personally threatened, being reassured by the low death rate in their own age group. Recommendation: "the perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased." British paper. Fauci had no part in it. --- The result showed up in the survey data. By July 2020, Americans believed the under-44s were 30 percent of COVID deaths. The actual figure was 2.7 percent. The young overestimated their risk roughly fiftyfold. Emergency powers rest on consent. Consent tracks perceived danger. --- And one diary entry almost nobody is reading. Fauci on Moderna's patent filing: "Moderna has not acted in good faith." He convened Collins and Tabak to retain Williams & Connolly, to claim NIAID's share of the product he was on television every night telling Americans to take. --- What I am not claiming. Fauci was not a named inventor on mRNA-1273. He drew no royalty from Moderna's $400 million payment. Anyone saying otherwise is wrong. The conflict is structural rather than personal. That is worse. Nobody has to be bought. --- He will not be prosecuted. The pardon closed that door. Burdick v. United States, 1915: a pardon carries an imputation of guilt, and its acceptance is a confession of it. 🧵Is the air you're breathing really shortening your life? For decades we've been told that tiny airborne particles (PM2.5) cause hundreds of thousands of premature deaths every year. What if that conclusion rests on statistical choices that don't survive scrutiny? Our latest essay: --- The famous London smog disaster of 1952 was real. So were the Meuse Valley (1930) and Donora (1948) tragedies. But those disasters resulted from extraordinary conditions that modern emissions controls have largely eliminated. Using them to justify today's air quality claims deserves a closer look. --- Much of modern air-quality policy traces back to one influential epidemiology study: The Harvard Six Cities Study. 8,111 participants. Six cities. Thousands of citations. Billions of dollars in regulatory consequences. But how robust were its conclusions? --- Here's the question few people ask: If different scientists analyze the same observational dataset, do they reach the same answer? Increasingly, the answer is no. Modern "many analyst" and multiverse studies show that reasonable analytical choices can produce dramatically different conclusions. --- In one published example, changing just ONE covariate—yesterday's temperature—changed the result from statistically insignificant to statistically significant. One modeling decision. Two completely different public-health conclusions. --- Meanwhile, much larger studies followed. Millions of people. Millions of deaths. Using more detailed individual-level data. Several failed to demonstrate the association that made the Harvard study famous. Why are those studies rarely discussed? --- Another uncomfortable question: Why has the original Six Cities dataset never been independently reproduced using today's more advanced spatio-temporal statistical methods? In most scientific fields, reproducibility is the standard—not the exception. --- There is also the publication problem. Positive findings are more likely to be published. Negative findings often disappear into file drawers. Editors, reviewers, grant agencies, and academic incentives all reward exciting results. That's not conspiracy. It's incentive structure. --- None of this argues that air pollution can never harm health. It clearly can under extreme conditions.
