For Simone Weil, who is the one talking to them, raw force is the main driver of history. It envelops people, nations, society, and swallows them up like a locust swarm from which there is no escape. The very existence of an army dictates that war, and whichever nation is able to be more powerful in pure force dictates the ideology, culture, and society of humanity, not the other way around. For example, if the Nazis had been strong enough to win, it would have become the default ideology. The Romans spread Roman and Greek thought and culture by force. Christianity was largely spread by force as well. If we encounter aliens, it may very well be aliens who spread through force.

The possibility of anti-nerd Aliens is rarely explored by Sci-Fi authors, because Sci-Fi authors are all nerds and create the world in their image. It's going to be a shock when they land and idiots run their society too.

Yes, it is taken as a given that Spinoza could time travel, and yes the point of the comic is that if we worshipped Socrates as a God we would have lightsabers by now.

If beauty is determined by just counting up the preferences of the population, then all she really needs to do is breed an army of Orcs with a fetish for domineering older women. A simple, elegant solution.

There is a stranger internal logic to a lot of the early disney movies, especially Cinderella, where it is required by the story that she is secretly already of a higher class. Her wealthy parents died and her stepmother stole the estate, and forced her to work. If, of course, she were simply born as a member of the working class and employed as a maid, then it would have been perfect correct to tell her that she can't go to the ball. It would have been correct to make her do the chores. The story is always resolved when through the magic of true love and the magic of magic, the princess once again is returned to her rightful place within the ruling class. We can of course imagine another version of these stories, where princesses like Jasmine, Cinderella, or even Snow White, when they live among the working class feel the injustice not that they personally are brought low, but that everyone is. They would feel solidarity for everyone not born rich, rather than disdain that they had to be counted among them. And in the immortal words of Eugene Debs they would say "when I rise it will be with the ranks, and not from the ranks". And then I guess they would stab the prince in the face or something, I don't know, I haven't really thought it all out. Something tells me the billionaires that run Disney wouldn't like my pitch though.

You ever notice how Disney tends not to make their Princesses communist revolutionaries? What's the deal with that? Come on.

"Postmodernism" is a broad philosophical and cultural movement in late 70s and 80s. In fact The Postmodern Condition was published in 1979, two years after Star Wars came out. It describes how society at large had more or less lost faith that single driving "meta-narratives" were the end goal of history. No one really believed anymore that single narrative like Communism, the Enlightenment and Science, or for that matter a all powerful "Force" controlling our destiny, which would eventually resolve all contradictions and reach humanity's ultimate goal. Instead, society is fractured into a multiplicity of people with different goals and understandings. An interesting part of this is that we also seemed more and more incapable of making movies that straightforwardly portray epic struggles between good and evil. The age of postmodernism is the age of sympathetic villains and dark heroes. Artists and audiences alike reject tales of Light defeating Dark once and for all. We simply aren't able to write the original Star Wars anymore today. A lot of people recognized this when the new movies came out, of course, and thought it was being incorporated into the movie itself. Rey was to be the girl from nowhere who would reject the binary and grand meta-narrative of the light side of the force triumphing over the dark side of the force, and recognized that only by fracturing that story could humanity finally move past the struggle, and allow for individuality and dissent within a new Jedi Order that incorporates competing conceptions of human existence and knowledge. Instead, on account of the fact that they were mostly morons who understood none of this, we got a weird attempt to do both. Or maybe they were being doubly postmodern by having multiple directors who couldn't even agree on the narrative of the movies. Who knows.

To be clear I'm not making fun of vegans, I'm making fun of people who stay out of politics while a power mad politician normalizes cruelty in society.

Quintus Sextius was a quasi Stoic Roman philosopher, who apparently came from a wealthy, powerful family, and turned down a Senate role from Julius Caesar. He had an interesting argument for Veganism, which is based more around the Greek and Roman ethics of the time. Instead of talking about suffering, it talked about the virtue in the individual. Eating things which have their origin in cruelty causes the person to become accustomed to cruelty. In a way it erodes your virtue and soul. Of course, if there was anything in Roman society that got you accustomed to cruelty, it was probably politics. The incredibly brutal acts of Caesar were celebrated and praised officially, so it seems like maybe he could have gone into politics to try to temper the cruelty of the State. I mean, they would have just ignored him probably, but most people probably ignored his vegan argument too, so maybe poor Sextius was doomed either way.
