Honour the Names of Allāh Wherever They May Be
Shaykh Abū ʿAṭīyah حفظه الله mentioned in his Kitāb at-Tawḥīd lesson (chapters 46–47) on 9th Shaʿbān 1447 AH a common mistake that has become widespread in our times — a serious deficiency in the tawḥīd of many Muslims: dishonouring the Name of Allāh.
Allāh تعالى says:
{ذَٰلِكَۖ وَمَن يُعَظِّمۡ حُرُمَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦۗ}
“That [has been commanded], and whoever honours the sacred ordinances of Allāh, it is better for him with his Lord.”
— al-Ḥajj: 30
And He تعالى also says:
{ذَٰلِكَۖ وَمَن يُعَظِّمۡ شَعَٰٓئِرَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقۡوَى ٱلۡقُلُوبِ}
“That is so. And whoever honours the symbols of Allāh — indeed, it is from the taqwā of the hearts.”
— al-Ḥajj: 32
From these āyāt, the scholars have derived the obligation of honouring every place in which the Name of Allāh appears, whether written or printed.
This includes newspapers, drawings, books, leaflets, booklets, papers, old maṣāḥif (copies of the Qurʾān), and even the books of the innovators. The place itself is irrelevant — what matters is that the Name of Allāh must always be venerated.
Unfortunately, this has become a widespread problem and sin in our times. One finds items bearing the Name of Allāh discarded on the ground, torn and disrespected, as people pass by without any concern.
The Shaykh mentioned a story about his teacher in Yemen who once saw a torn piece of a muṣḥaf lying in filth in the street. As he walked past, he said to himself:
“Are you a Muslim, leaving the words of Allāh like this?”
So he returned, removed it, cleaned it, perfumed it, and then burnt it. This is how a Muslim is: he honours the Name of Allāh wherever it may be.
This also includes names which contain the Name of Allāh, such as: ʿAbdullāh, ʿAbdur-Raḥmān, and the like.
Even if the text is found in the books of the innovators, the Name of Allāh itself must still be respected, even though the book should be disposed of.
From the agreed-upon methods mentioned by the scholars for disposing of papers containing the Names of Allāh are two:
1. Burning them.
2. Burying them in the ground, where they are protected and eventually return to the earth.
This is from the reality of taʿẓīm (veneration) of Allāh — and it is from the signs of complete tawḥīd.
May Allāh protect us from deficiencies in our tawḥīd.
