The current AI situations and Silicon Valley CEOs saying AI is going to “kill us all 2030” is ridiculous . They’re selling fear to raise more and more ridiculous amounts of money, only to squeeze out another 10% benchmark improvement and call it revolutionary. AI is nowhere near AGI. Outside of genuinely impressive things like AlphaFold and some other scientific applications, I haven’t seen the kind of breakthrough people keep promising. A lot of it is still computer use, automation, and digital work. By 2030, I’m more worried that people will become dumber and more dependent on AI than extinct. The whole thing feels like a massive hype cycle and a money making scheme dressed up as the end of humanity. This is my take! I could be wrong 😑

These days, almost every product idea you come up with already exists. But here’s the opportunity: legacy software. A lot of old products stopped evolving because their customers got comfortable and the companies got comfortable with their systems. That’s the gap. Take an existing product, rebuild it with modern UX, better tech, AI, and a better experience and actually market it. You don’t always need a brand-new idea. Sometimes, you just need to build the better version of something people already use.

We're releasing the first batch of Dataset.ET open speech data for Amharic. 22.7 hours. 7,405 recordings. 320 speakers. Free, CC BY 4.0, on Hugging Face. Amharic has close to no open speech data. That's the gap we're trying to close, and this is the first step rather than the finished thing. Some honesty about what this is: it's a first batch. The audio isn't preprocessed yet. We're not going to tell you it's the best quality out there. We don't think it is. What we want is for people to actually use it and tell us where it falls short. The next release will be different: properly preprocessed audio, a real data pipeline with testing and validation built in. This exists because 320 people in Ethiopia gave their voices to it, and because contributors reviewed each other's recordings. Thank you to all of them.
